A Delta Air Lines flight from Los Angeles to Shanghai was forced to make an unexpected diversion about six hours into its journey, leaving hundreds of passengers—and a Hollywood actor—stranded overnight in Seattle.
Flight DL39, operated by an Airbus A350-900 carrying 271 passengers, 11 flight attendants, and four pilots, had been heading northwest across the Pacific when the crew made the decision to turn back and land at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport.
Among the travelers was Simu Liu, the actor best known for his lead role in Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Shortly after landing, Liu posted a photo from the cabin on Instagram with the caption: “Flight to Shanghai turned around because someone (not me) got drunk and caused a disturbance.”
His lighthearted clarification—“not me”—helped propel the incident across social media, turning an airline operational issue into a trending topic.
Why the Plane Turned Around
According to Delta Air Lines, the diversion was triggered by a passenger who repeatedly refused to follow crew instructions. Local outlet KOMO reported that multiple warnings were issued before the captain decided to reroute the aircraft.
Aviation industry sources note that diverting a trans-Pacific flight is not a decision taken lightly. Once a plane enters the remote stretches of the Pacific Ocean, available alternate airports become increasingly scarce. If a security threat or uncontrollable disruption occurs, pilots often choose to land before reaching the point of no return.

After the aircraft landed in Seattle, law enforcement officers were already on the tarmac. The individual involved was removed from the plane. As of now, Delta and local police have not released the passenger’s identity or confirmed whether criminal charges will be filed.

Although officials have provided few details, multiple self-identified passengers on the same flight have shared their own versions of events online.
Several posts claim the disruption involved not one person but an elderly couple seated in the premium economy cabin. According to these accounts, the pair engaged in a prolonged argument with crew members and ignored repeated requests to comply.
One user wrote that the captain explained during the rescheduled flight to Shanghai the next day that the return was due to a conflict between two passengers and the crew. Another commenter alleged the individuals have since been “blacklisted” from flying Delta again.
It is important to note that these claims have not been independently verified by Delta or law enforcement.
A Long Night in Seattle
For the vast majority of passengers, the immediate consequence was a shattered itinerary. The flight, originally scheduled to continue to Shanghai that evening, was canceled outright. Hundreds of travelers were forced to spend the night in Seattle and wait for a replacement flight the following day.
Some took to social media with dark humor. One passenger joked: “I thought we were almost in Asia, and then I woke up still in America.” Another quipped: “Sleepless in Seattle just became a reality show.”
Among the frustrated travelers were those with urgent personal matters. One social media user said a family member was seriously ill and waiting for their return. Another was heading back for a wedding. One passenger who actually lives in Seattle had flown to Los Angeles specifically to catch the nonstop flight—only to land back where they started hours later.
The High Cost of Disruption
While inflight disturbances have become more common on international routes in recent years, it remains rare for a fully loaded wide-body jet to turn around mid-Pacific over a passenger incident.
From an airline’s perspective, a diversion of this scale incurs significant costs: additional fuel, airport and ground handling fees, crew duty time limits requiring replacement, overnight accommodations for hundreds of passengers, and rebooking logistics. Industry estimates place the total loss from such an event in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
For the passengers caught in the middle, the toll is measured in missed connections, canceled hotel reservations, broken business trips, and emotional distress. Delta has not announced any compensation or goodwill gestures for affected travelers as of this report.
