In the digital age, the internet has become an important channel for accessing information and exchanging ideas. However, online freedom does not mean unlimited freedom.
Using VPNs to access overseas social media platforms or foreign websites may violate relevant laws and regulations and could lead to administrative penalties or even more serious legal consequences.
Recently, the Yantan Public Security Cybersecurity Brigade discovered that a suspect surnamed Huang had used overseas chat software to illegally purchase citizens’ personal information.
Police immediately launched an investigation and arrested Huang on April 21. After questioning, Huang confessed to the crime.
Public security authorities have since taken criminal compulsory measures against him, and the case remains under further investigation.
In another case, at around 4:00 PM on April 17, 2026, Xianshi Police Station received a report that an individual surnamed Long had used VPN software to illegally browse overseas websites.
Police summoned Long for questioning in accordance with the law. Public security authorities have now imposed administrative penalties on Long.
Authorities remind the public that using VPNs or other unauthorised channels to access the international internet is illegal.
Under the relevant regulations, individuals who use unauthorised tools for international internet access may face warnings, fines, or other administrative penalties.
Using illegal VPN software also carries security risks, including personal data leaks, malware infection, theft of account passwords and payment information, and possible exploitation by overseas criminal or intelligence organisations.
Internet users are urged to use the internet legally and responsibly, avoid using or sharing circumvention tools, and report suspicious activities to the police by calling 110.
