They adapt to physical forces beyond their control, struggling to maintain balance in a mesmerizing exploration of gravity, trust, and human vulnerability.

Bourgeois, described by The New York Times as "a dramatist of physics," blends circus arts, dance, and theater.

Schnellertollermeier @ Singer Space

Shanghai Shows Oct 2026–Jan 2027 : 32 Concerts, Musicals & Theater

Three measures. Three bodies.

Swiss trio Schnellertollermeier — bassist Andi Schnellmann, guitarist Manuel Troller and drummer David Meier — come together as a restless organism, weaving a present held tight yet always unfolding.

Formed in 2006, the group fuses modern composition, minimalism, free improvisation and raw rock energy, pushing bass, guitar and drums beyond their conventional roles into a shared, pulsing time.

Their 2008 debut 'Holz' established them as a rising force in Switzerland's underground scene; 'X' (2015) was named among the year's best by The Wall Street Journal, and 'Rights' (2017) earned another year-end accolade from global sound project Cities and Memory.

With tours taking them from Canada's FIMAV and Tokyo's SuperDeluxe to Germany's Haldern Pop, South America and China, their live shows return to a central challenge: how to preserve the unexpected within meticulous control, while pushing sound to its fullest intensity.

In 2026, their 20th anniversary year, Schnellertollermeier return with a new album, 'Shadow Web.' Released on 13 November, the record will receive its world live premiere on this China tour.

LUDWIG² – THE KING IS BACK @ Shanghai Culture Square

Shanghai Shows Oct 2026–Jan 2027 : 32 Concerts, Musicals & Theater

This winter, the majestic stage concert LUDWIG² – THE KING IS BACK returns to Shanghai Culture Square for an exclusive seven-performance run.

Following its acclaimed debut as a 2024 Year-end Hit, this grand production returns with significant upgrades: a stellar cast of leading stars, an expanded ensemble, and newly added songs and scenes from the original musical.

The symphony orchestra continues to anchor the work in classical grandeur, bringing the Bavarian fairy-tale king’s dreams and legends to life with resounding melodies.

The story follows Ludwig II, who ascended the throne at 18, only to face noble opposition for his pacifist ideals and obsession with Wagner’s operas.

His vision—embodied by the iconic Neuschwanstein Castle—led to his infamous deposition and mysterious death, yet his mythical world endures.

Don’t miss this limited engagement, the production’s only stop in China, offering a breathtaking blend of history, art, and myth on an epic musical scale.

Einstein – A Matter of Time @ Shanghai Culture Square

Shanghai Shows Oct 2026–Jan 2027 : 32 Concerts, Musicals & Theater

Experience the Chinese premiere of the electrifying German original musical Einstein – A Matter of Time, landing at Shanghai Culture Square in December.

From acclaimed composer Frank Wildhorn (Jekyll & Hyde) and director-writer Gil Mehmert, this epic new production brings the extraordinary life of Albert Einstein to the stage—from his student days in Zurich and his revolutionary theory of relativity, to his turbulent marriage, anti-war activism, forced exile, and final years at Princeton.

Blending soaring rock-infused anthems with intimate lyricism, the score and stunning visual design trace the human story behind the icon: a man torn between genius and doubt, love and isolation, principle and fame.

Critics have hailed it as "flawless in dramatic structure" and "masterful from lyrical to rock" (Südwest-Presse), and the production swept four wins (including Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor) at the 2025 Deutscher Musical Theater Preis.

This is a must-see theatrical event for musical lovers and history enthusiasts alike. Don't miss this journey through time with one of history's most brilliant minds.

Sotterraneo connects with Shakespeare, who refuses to be a dusty icon. He talks back, dismantling clichés, conspiracy theories, and academic baggage with sarcasm and wit.

For once, the Bard interprets us, turning the mic on the audience. After 400 years of being dissected, he finally gets his say—emerging not as a marble statue but as a living, flawed, gloriously unpredictable Shakespeare.

Funny, irreverent, and far more interesting than any footnote. An impossible interview where the subject becomes the interrogator.

Language: Italian, with English and Chinese subtitles.

Skate of the Art | Skateboarding Across Cultures @ Fotografiska Shanghai

Shanghai Shows Oct 2026–Jan 2027 : 32 Concerts, Musicals & Theater

Skate of the Art: Skateboarding Across Cultures is a major group exhibition that redefines skateboarding not merely as a sport, but as a global visual and cultural language.

The show traces the culture’s evolution from the sun-drenched empty pools of 1970s California to the dynamic streets of contemporary cities worldwide.

Featuring over 20 photographers from five continents—including iconic figures like Hugh Holland and Ed Templeton, alongside global documentarians such as Luisa Dörr and local Chinese artists like Jedi Zhou and Jeff Yiu—the exhibition charts skateboarding’s migration and its adaptation across diverse cultures.

Highlights include the historic image of Danny Way jumping the Great Wall and intimate portraits of communities from Bolivia to Beijing.

Beyond photography, the exhibition integrates multimedia installations and street-textured environments to create an immersive experience.

As a cultural partnership with Nike SB, the show extends beyond the gallery with public programs, celebrating how the camera lens has not only documented but actively shaped skate culture.

It is an invitation to explore the freedom, creativity, and cross-cultural dialogue that define this enduring global youth movement.

Robert Zhao Renhui | Trying to Remember a Tree @ Fotografiska Shanghai

Shanghai Shows Oct 2026–Jan 2027 : 32 Concerts, Musicals & Theater

Trying to Remember a Tree is a contemplative solo exhibition by Singaporean artist Robert Zhao Renhui—the representative for the Singapore Pavilion at the 2024 Venice Biennale.

The show centers on the complete lifecycle of a single fallen rain tree, transforming overlooked urban debris into a profound meditation on nature, memory, and human perception.

Through five interconnected bodies of work—spanning photography, moving image, surveillance footage, and installation—Zhao presents the meticulous documentation of 28,017 individual leaves, severed trunk fragments, and 24-hour monitoring of the tree's decomposition.

In modern cities, dead trees are routinely cleared as waste; Zhao's patient observation reclaims these remnants, inviting us to truly attend rather than merely see.

His guiding axiom—"without looking at a tree, there is no forest"—grounds the exhibition in a micro-level focus that resists grand ecological narratives in favor of intimate, grounded encounters.

Running until November 6, 2026, the exhibition asks viewers to slow down and reconnect with the vital, often invisible entanglements between urban life and the natural world.

It is a quiet but powerful reminder that remembering a single tree might be the first step toward remembering our shared ecosystem.

Huang Jingyao | La Dénivelée @ Fotografiska Shanghai

Shanghai Shows Oct 2026–Jan 2027 : 32 Concerts, Musicals & Theater

Huang Jingyao's solo exhibition 'La Dénivelée' is part of Fotografiska Shanghai's emerging artist program.

The title draws on French theorist Hubert Damisch's argument that photography persistently unsettles history rather than merely recording it.

For Huang, the term signals multiple ruptures: data glitches that shatter images, photography's intrusion into art, the individual's anxiety against the city's cold order, and the gap between memory and material form.

The featured series 'Chaotic Data Fences, Baraka, and the Cityscape' grew from a 2021 accident when a corrupted memory card produced fractured, yellow-cast, and blue-blocked images of Guangzhou's skyline, which she treated as a Morse code to decipher.

Inspired by the abstraction of traditional patterns, she breaks city photographs into geometric modules and rebuilds them with acrylic, moving between photography and object-making.

Tan Yingjie | Nocturnal Reflections @ Fotografiska Shanghai

Shanghai Shows Oct 2026–Jan 2027 : 32 Concerts, Musicals & Theater

Tan Yingjie's solo exhibition 'Nocturnal Reflections' at Fotografiska Shanghai marks the Chinese artist's first major institutional solo show in the city.

Born in Hunan in 1992 and trained in sculpture at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Tan works across spatial installation, video, performance, and images.

The exhibition centers on his signature language of 'folding,' which began as a physical gesture—folding a two-dimensional image upright to create volume and space—and evolved into a conceptual tool spanning form, urban reality, and inner psychology.

Oversized images exceeding ten meters are cut, folded, and reassembled into sculptural installations, compelling viewers to duck, turn, and navigate the gallery with their whole bodies rather than simply look.

The show draws on Tan's insomnia and anxiety after moving to Shenzhen, his loss of a studio, and the death of his grandmother, whose five-day funeral rites and folk songs about the bitterness of night shaped the work 'San Xian Hua.'

Other pieces include 'Night of the Earth,' a giant central installation modeled on the orbicularis oculi muscle of a closed eye, using NASA night imagery with human light points erased so imagination can pass through the gaps and 'House of Trivia,' a performance in a home-like structure expressing suppressed emotions.

Through repeated acts of folding, Tan links personal memory to parallel universes of time and space.
