Shenyang Delivery Rider Divorcing American Wife, Denies Green Card Claim

A Chinese delivery rider who married an American woman just five months after they met is now preparing to divorce her, citing cultural differences while denying online claims that he married her for a U.S. green card.

A Chinese food delivery rider in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, who met his American wife while delivering food to her, has revealed that the couple are preparing to divorce, citing cultural differences and difficulties in understanding each other. The announcement has also prompted online speculation about his motives for marrying her, with some questioning whether he married her to obtain a U.S. green card.

On October 23, Mr. Liu told reporters that his relationship with his wife, Hannah, had been genuine and that their decision to divorce was reached amicably.

“I once thought love was enough, but I never expected it to be unable to overcome the realities of life,” he said.

  • Language Barriers and Different Lifestyles

In a video posted online, Liu said the couple were preparing to divorce and planned to complete the formalities in Fushun, Liaoning Province, in about two months. He cited cultural differences as the main reason for their separation.

Liu said Hannah had left northeastern China and was currently working as a teacher in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. He explained that their language barrier often made communication difficult, even when they used translation apps.

Their differences also extended to everyday life, including food preferences and hobbies. Liu said he preferred northeastern Chinese cuisine, while Hannah favored sweets and pizza.

When they first fell in love, the couple believed that love would help them overcome their differences. However, after getting married, they gradually realized that they struggled to accommodate each other's habits and expectations.

Liu acknowledged that they had rushed into marriage early in their relationship and that their differences became increasingly apparent over time.

  • Husband Denies Green Card and Fake Marriage Claims

Following Liu's announcement, some commenters questioned why he had married Hannah. Some alleged that he had entered the marriage to obtain a U.S. green card, while others suggested that he had married her to attract attention and build an online following.

Liu rejected these allegations, insisting that their relationship had been genuine and denying claims of a sham marriage or infidelity.

“I only graduated from primary school. When we first got married, I didn't even know what a green card was,” he said.

He added that the decision to divorce was mutual and that both wanted the other to have the freedom to move on.

“We agreed that separating would be better for both of us, so we wouldn't hold each other back,” Liu said.

When contacted by reporters on October 23, Hannah confirmed that she was still in China and planned to return to the United States next summer. She declined to comment further on the divorce.

  • From a Food Delivery Encounter to Marriage

According to an earlier report, Liu and Hannah first met on November 6, 2024, when she ordered a bowl of mixed noodles through a food delivery platform.

Liu delivered the order to an apartment building in Shenyang's Hunnan District, where the two met in an elevator. He greeted Hannah with the words, “Hello, I love you.” She smiled in response.

In January 2025, Liu bought a diamond ring and proposed to Hannah at a subway station.

“Although we hadn't known each other for very long, I felt she was very kind and was the person I had been looking for,” he said at the time.

The couple held their wedding in Liu's hometown of Fushun on March 28, 2025. Although Hannah's parents were unable to attend in person from the United States, they sent their congratulations via video.

Less than a year after their wedding, the couple are now preparing to go their separate ways, with Liu saying that the realities of married life ultimately proved more difficult to overcome than they had expected.
