Master China's 11.11 Singles' Day shopping festival with key 2026 dates, Tmall presale info starting October 15, coupon tips, and international shipping rules.
Tags:China’s biggest shopping festival promises discounts on everything from smartphones to skincare. But with promotions starting weeks in advance, knowing when — and how — to shop can make all the difference.
Every November, shopping apps across China fill with countdowns, coupons and livestream sales. Known as Singles’ Day or Double 11, November 11 has become one of the world’s largest online shopping events.
The tradition began in 1993 at Nanjing University as a day for single people to celebrate themselves. In 2009, Alibaba turned the date into a major online shopping promotion. Today, platforms including Taobao, Tmall, JD.com and Pinduoduo compete for shoppers with discounts, subsidies and special offers.
But the festival is no longer just about shopping on one day. Retailers have increasingly extended promotions into October, giving consumers more time to compare offers — and more opportunities to spend money.
This year, Tmall’s presale period begins on October 15, while its main sales period for ready-to-ship products runs from October 20 to November 13. Here are six things worth knowing before opening your shopping apps.
1. Start comparing prices early
A “50% off” label does not automatically mean a bargain. Check the product’s usual price and compare the same item across different sellers. Add products to your wishlist before the sale so you can judge whether the final price is genuinely attractive.
When are the key 2026 shopping dates?
Picture from Internet
- October 15.: Tmall’s presale activities and deposit payments begin.
- October 20, 8 p.m.: The remaining balance on presale items becomes payable, and the main sales period for ready-to-ship products begins.
- November 13, 11:59 p.m.: The main ready-to-ship sales period ends.
That gives shoppers nearly 25 days to browse and buy ready-to-ship products. Starting early can help you compare prices without feeling pressured by countdowns.
2. Understand how coupons work
Chinese platforms often combine store coupons, platform vouchers and spending thresholds. A discount may only apply when you spend a certain amount or buy selected products.
However, Tmall’s main promotion this year includes an “official instant discount”. Eligible products can receive a discount individually, without requiring shoppers to combine multiple purchases to meet a minimum spending threshold.
This could make it easier to buy a single item without adding unnecessary products to your cart.
Still, check the final checkout price rather than the advertised discount. Spending an extra ¥100 just to save ¥20 is not a saving.
3. Be careful with presale deposits
Some sellers allow customers to reserve products by paying a deposit before the main promotion. Tmall’s 2026 presale period starts on October 15, with the remaining balance payable from 8 p.m. on October 20.
Read the terms carefully: deposits may be non-refundable under certain conditions, and you may need to pay the remaining balance within a specified period.
Before paying, check the total price, deposit conditions and payment deadline. A product advertised at a low presale price may not be the best deal once all conditions are considered.
4. Choose reliable sellers
For cosmetics, skincare and electronics, check reviews, product specifications and seller information. Official brand stores and authorised retailers can offer greater confidence in product authenticity.
Avoid suspicious payment links and requests to transfer money outside the platform.
With thousands of sellers competing for attention, a large discount should not be the only reason to trust a listing.
5. Check delivery and return policies
Shipping costs, delivery dates and return conditions can affect whether a deal is worthwhile. Confirm these details before placing an order. China generally provides a seven-day no-reason return right for eligible online purchases, subject to legal exceptions. Customised products and certain other goods are excluded.
Shopping from outside China?
Taobao’s 2026 Singles’ Day campaign is scheduled to launch simultaneously in 20 overseas markets. Free shipping will be available in 13 countries and regions, and more than 90% of medium- and large-sized products are expected to qualify for direct international shipping.
More than 1.2 million Taobao and Tmall merchants are reportedly participating in this year’s overseas expansion.
These arrangements could make Chinese products more accessible to international shoppers. However, shipping eligibility varies, so check whether your destination and chosen product qualify. Also look for possible import duties, delivery restrictions and additional fees.
6. Do not let livestreams rush you
Livestream hosts may advertise exclusive coupons or claim that only a few items remain. Some offers are genuine, but countdowns can encourage impulse buying. Compare prices independently and buy only what you need. If an offer seems too good to be true, take a moment to check the seller and product details before paying.
Shop smarter, not more
For international residents, 11.11 can be a useful opportunity to buy everyday essentials, winter clothing or electronics at competitive prices. The expansion of international shipping may also give shoppers outside China more ways to access the festival. The trick is to plan ahead, check the conditions and set a budget. The best deal is not the biggest discount. It is getting something you actually need at a price worth paying.
