According to media reports, he had been promoted by some yoga studios as an experienced Indian instructor and was able to charge premium rates for one-on-one sessions. Investigators reportedly found that his actual training and qualifications did not match the image presented to customers.
During private lessons, students were allegedly told that video recordings were being made so their posture and movements could be reviewed later. Police reportedly believe that some recordings were instead made without proper consent and captured students in situations they considered private.
Authorities are said to have recovered a large number of videos from electronic devices linked to the suspect.
Some of the material was allegedly uploaded to overseas websites, where certain clips attracted significant online attention.
Chinese reports also claim that some videos may have been sold online. However, widely circulated claims about the total amount of money earned have not been independently verified.
The investigation is also looking into the suspect’s immigration and employment arrangements. Reports allege that he originally entered China on a tourist visa before later obtaining documents that allowed him to work.
Authorities are reportedly examining whether false or misleading company information was used during that process.
The case came to wider attention after people connected to several students reportedly discovered the recordings and raised concerns with the yoga studio and local authorities.
Following the incident, the studio involved said it had ended its relationship with the instructor. The case has also raised questions about how fitness and wellness businesses verify the qualifications, backgrounds and legal employment status of foreign instructors.
The investigation has triggered extensive discussion online, particularly around privacy, consent and safety during private fitness classes.
