Twenty students at an engineering university have received official warnings after using VPNs and other unauthorized methods to access overseas websites through the university’s campus network.
According to a notice issued by the university’s School of Mathematical Sciences, the students, including both undergraduate and postgraduate students, used their personal campus network accounts to connect to overseas networks through VPNs and other “non standard channels” between September 18 and 19, 2026.
The university said the activity was detected and recorded by its network security monitoring system.
According to the notice, the students’ actions violated national regulations governing international computer network connections, as well as the university’s student management policies and campus network rules.
However, the university noted that these were first time violations. It also said there was no evidence that the students had distributed harmful information, made illegal profits, or caused other serious consequences.
As a result, all 20 students were issued formal warnings rather than facing more severe disciplinary measures.
The university advised students who require access to overseas academic resources for research or study to use library databases or other officially authorized access services.
Students were also reminded that they are responsible for all activity carried out through their personal campus network accounts and should not share or lend their accounts to others.
