A Ningbo fruit vendor attacked with watermelons on July 28 won over 60,000 yuan in compensation after mediation. The 21-year-old victim spent five days in hospital and did not fight back.

A violent dispute at a night market in Ningbo, eastern China, has ended with a fruit vendor receiving more than 60,000 yuan (about $8,400) in compensation after a man repeatedly smashed watermelons against his head.
The incident happened on July 28 at a night market in Daqi Subdistrict, Beilun District. Footage from the scene showed a 21-year-old vendor, identified as Meng Mouyu, sitting on a small stool as a man threw more than 10 watermelons at him within around 30 seconds.
Several watermelons burst on impact, covering the vendor and his stall in fruit and juice. The man's wife also reportedly threw grapes at Meng's face. According to Meng's father, the confrontation began when a customer was choosing a watermelon at the stall. The customer allegedly pressed his fingernails into the fruit, leaving marks on the skin. When Meng asked him to be more careful, an argument broke out.
The customer's daughter joined the dispute and later called her husband, identified by police as Yang Mou. When Yang arrived, he allegedly picked up a watermelon and began throwing it at Meng's head.

Witnesses were shocked by the attack. Some shouted for the couple to stop while others called police.
What particularly drew attention was that Meng did not fight back. He remained seated throughout the attack, even though two watermelon knives were reportedly lying nearby at the stall.
When Yang realized that police had been called, he stopped and reportedly said, “How much are these watermelons? I'll buy them all.” He then threw several banknotes toward Meng before attempting to leave. Bystanders stopped the couple until police arrived.
The following day, Beilun police said Yang and his wife had been administratively detained and fined. Police said Meng suffered soft-tissue injuries to his head and other parts of his body.

The dispute did not end with the police action. After the couple's detention, both sides entered negotiations over compensation.
Meng's father later said online claims that the couple had completely refused to pay were inaccurate. Instead, the two sides initially disagreed sharply over the amount.
According to him, the couple first offered around 10,000 yuan, while their lawyer later said they could pay a maximum of 20,000 yuan. Meng's family rejected the amount, saying it did not adequately cover his medical expenses, lost income and other losses.
Meng spent five days in hospital. Medical records showed that he suffered a head injury, dizziness and concussion. He was also diagnosed with an injury to the supraspinatus tendon in his left shoulder and fluid accumulation in the shoulder joint. His medical bills exceeded 10,000 yuan, and doctors advised him to rest and avoid physical work after discharge.

After further mediation by police, the two sides eventually reached an agreement.
On September 19, Meng's father confirmed that the couple had agreed to pay more than 60,000 yuan in total. The compensation covered medical treatment, damaged fruit, lost income and other expenses.

Meng's father said he was relieved that his son had not retaliated.
“He used to have a relatively hot temper,” he said. “Fortunately, he didn't fight back. Otherwise, things could have become much more serious.”
While some online commenters questioned why Meng did not defend himself, his father said the experience appeared to have changed his son.
After the chaotic night at the market, he said, Meng seemed to have become noticeably more mature.
