A Champion Pizza worker in Hangzhou was detained seven days after a livestream showed him contaminating a pizza. The Binhe Plaza branch closed for rectification on September 14.

The worker, identified by police only by his surname, Yang, was accused of deliberately contaminating a finished pizza while on duty. Authorities said he was punished for conduct classified as picking quarrels and provoking trouble.
The incident happened at a Champion Pizza branch located in Binhe Plaza, Hangzhou. The outlet has since stopped operating while the case is being investigated. A notice posted outside the restaurant said the store was temporarily closed for rectification.
Local market supervision officials said they questioned the person responsible for the outlet on September 14 and formally began investigating the case. Authorities later confirmed that the pizza involved in the incident was discarded before it could be served or delivered to a customer.
The incident was captured on September 12 through a livestream showing the restaurant’s open kitchen. In the footage, a male staff member can be seen taking off his cap and touching or shaking his hair directly above a prepared pizza. Moments later, he appears to move his hand over the food as though sprinkling something onto it.
Other employees were visible nearby during the incident, but the footage did not show anyone stepping in to stop him. The worker also appeared relaxed and was seen smiling and speaking with colleagues.
The video quickly spread online and triggered widespread criticism, with many viewers questioning the restaurant’s hygiene controls and staff supervision.
A woman surnamed Liu said she noticed the incident while watching the kitchen livestream on a food delivery platform. She began recording her screen after seeing unusual behavior from an employee and later uploaded the footage to social media.
Champion Pizza later released public statements saying the behavior was the personal action of an individual employee and did not represent the company’s standards.
The company said it had immediately suspended operations at the affected branch, reported the matter to police and promised to cooperate with regulators. It also announced additional food safety inspections across its other outlets.
