A family of eight, including six children, was killed in a house fire in Michigan last week — just days after two China-born adopted daughters had returned from a special trip to their birth country with their mother.
Authorities in Ottawa County, Michigan, said Monday that the deaths of 39-year-old Amanda “Mandi” Carol Krywulak and her six children have been ruled homicides, while her husband, 47-year-old Christopher Krywulak, died by suicide.
Investigators said they believe Christopher first shot his wife and the children before setting multiple fires inside the home and taking his own life. The fire, which broke out on the morning of July 24 in Grand Haven Township, was initially considered “suspicious,” with authorities investigating whether it was intentionally set.
When firefighters and deputies entered the burning home, they found all eight family members dead. The children ranged in age from 5 to 15.
According to investigators, four of the children were the couple’s biological sons, aged 15, 12, 11 and 5. The other two were 11-year-old twin girls, Caroline and Ella, who were adopted from China.
Just weeks before the tragedy, Mandi had taken the twins on a journey back to China — a trip she hoped would help them reconnect with their birthplace and learn more about their heritage.
Through posts shared on her TikTok account, Mandi documented parts of their China trip earlier this month. The mother and daughters visited places including Shanghai and Hangzhou.
On July 16, she shared photos from Hangzhou, describing it as “one of the most fun and coolest experiences of my entire life.”
The family dressed in traditional Hanfu clothing, enjoyed traditional Chinese food, watched performances, and even saw aerial acrobatics. Mandi wrote that she was proud of her daughters’ Chinese heritage and grateful to experience the journey together with them.
For Mandi, the trip appeared to be more than a vacation. It was a chance to show her daughters where they came from — to walk through the streets, see the scenery, experience Chinese culture and build a connection with their roots.
Now, the happy moments captured during that trip have become the family’s final shared memories online.
The couple had first met in 2008 and later built what appeared to be a close-knit family. They welcomed their first child in 2011 and eventually raised six children together. In past blog posts, Mandi described Christopher as a devoted father figure, while Christopher once wrote that he felt like “a very lucky man” ahead of their 10th wedding anniversary.
The sudden loss has left relatives and the local community devastated. Mandi’s parents shared a family beach photo and wrote that they were grateful for the joy the family had brought into their lives, adding: “We are truly heartbroken.”
Christopher had worked as vice president of sales and marketing at the American Heart Association since September 2023. The organization confirmed that his employment ended earlier this month but did not provide details. There is currently no evidence linking his employment status to the deaths.
Michigan State Police arson investigators are continuing to examine how the fire started and why multiple fire locations were found inside the home.
As the investigation continues, the story of a mother who recently brought her two adopted daughters back to China for a journey of identity and connection has become one of the most painful details surrounding the tragedy.
