China Railway Pet Travel Expands to 163 Stations, 364 Trains from July 1

China Railway Express has officially expanded and upgraded its “Pet Companion” travel service, effective July 1, 2026, offering greater convenience for passengers traveling with cats and dogs.

  • Service Network Expansion

The service now covers 32 additional stations—including Changbaishan, Tianjin, Jinan, Wuxi, Xiamen, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Beihai, Nanning, and Zunyi—and 92 additional high-speed trains (such as G7 and G44). This brings the total network to 163 high-speed rail stations and 364 bullet trains equipped to handle pet transport.

  • Eligibility and Capacity

The “Pet Companion” service accepts domesticated cats and dogs that are healthy and well-behaved. Each pet must weigh no more than 15 kg, with a shoulder height under 40 cm and body length under 52 cm.

For the “Pet Solo” option, each customer may ship up to one eligible pet per train trip. For the “Travel-with-Pet” option, passengers may now transport up to two compliant pets on the same train.

  • New Booking Channels

In addition to the existing China Railway Express WeChat mini-program, pet shipping reservations can now be made directly through the railway’s official 12306 mobile app. A dedicated “Pet Shipping” feature allows users to check available trains—marked with a “宠” (pet) icon—and book tickets and pet slots simultaneously.

1. For “Pet Solo” service, reservations must be made 2 to 5 days before the departure date, with pet photos and relevant information submitted via either digital channel.

2. For “Travel-with-Pet” service, the booking window is as follows:

(1) Before 12:00 noon on the day, the earliest bookable slot is for the next day.

(2) After 12:00 noon, the earliest bookable slot is for the day after tomorrow.

  • Summer Heat Protection

To address rising summer temperatures, China Railway Express has equipped all pet transport boxes with customized ice packs placed in dedicated compartments—ensuring no direct contact with the animal—to effectively lower internal temperatures during transit.

  • Upgraded Carrier Design

Transport boxes have been redesigned with stronger PC-material viewing windows and added physical locks on the exterior for enhanced security. The new door structure improves safety and durability throughout the journey.

  • Pricing and Insurance

1. “Pet Solo” service is priced at a standard rate based on transport distance (tiered by kilometer).

2. “Travel-with-Pet” service features flexible discounted rates that vary seasonally and by market conditions.

3. Every booking includes a complimentary basic insurance policy valued at RMB 2,000.

  • Pre-Trip Preparation and Support

Given the summer travel rush and higher temperatures, owners are advised to prepare their pets in advance—including crate acclimation training—to reduce stress during transit. Railway staff monitor all pets remotely throughout the journey and will handle any unusual situations promptly and professionally. Owners are asked to remain reachable and cooperative if contacted.

  • Check-in and Collection

Passengers must bring their pet, a valid ID, and a current “Animal Quarantine Certificate” to the China Railway Express service office at the departure high-speed rail station at the agreed time. After arrival, pets can be collected following SMS notifications from China Railway Express.

For more information, passengers can call the 12306 hotline or China Railway Express customer service at 95572, or check the 12306 app or the China Railway Express WeChat mini-program.
