Flight to Shanghai : Woman Collapses at 10,000m, Doctors Warn

An Australian woman collapsed two hours into China Eastern Airlines flight MU562 from Sydney to Shanghai, prompting an emergency response by four Shanghai-based doctors on board. With the help of specialists on the ground, the medical team stabilized her condition before the plane landed.

  • Four Doctors Respond to In-Flight Emergency

The incident occurred approximately two hours after the flight took off, when the woman suddenly collapsed at an altitude of around 10,000 meters. The cabin crew immediately made an announcement asking whether any medical professionals were on board.

Four doctors from the Shanghai Municipal Maternal and Child Health Center and the Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital were returning from an academic conference on the same flight. They responded to the announcement and rushed to assist the passenger.

After examining her, the doctors found that her blood oxygen saturation had dropped significantly, indicating a potentially dangerous situation. They promptly adjusted her position, loosened her heavy clothing and administered oxygen as they began emergency treatment.

  • In-Flight Wi-Fi Enables Remote Consultation

Suspecting a possible cardiovascular problem, the doctors sought additional medical expertise on the ground. Using the aircraft's Wi-Fi, they urgently contacted cardiology and critical care specialists at Zhongshan Hospital, affiliated with Fudan University, to conduct a remote consultation.

The team provided real-time updates on the woman's condition and received guidance from the hospital specialists, allowing the doctors on board to coordinate their response.

Through the coordinated efforts of the medical teams, the woman's heart rhythm and blood oxygen saturation returned to normal by the time the aircraft arrived at Shanghai Pudong International Airport. She was conscious and out of immediate danger.

  • Doctors Offer Advice for Air Travelers

The doctors noted that the relatively confined environment inside an aircraft can cause discomfort, including chest tightness and a subjective feeling of insufficient oxygen, particularly among people who are sensitive to changes in their physical environment or have underlying medical conditions.

Passengers, especially older adults and those with a history of illness, are advised to assess their physical condition before flying and avoid pushing themselves beyond their limits. Extra caution may be warranted when traveling to high-altitude destinations or places with significantly different climates.

The doctors also recommend that older passengers and those with chronic conditions carry a card containing essential medical information, including their medical history and regularly used medications.

Such information can help medical professionals assess a passenger's condition more accurately and respond more effectively if a medical emergency occurs during a journey.
