Rare Tornado Hits Hubei, Central China, Leaving 11 Dead and Hundreds Injured
A rare and powerful tornado struck Huanggang, a city in Hubei Province in central China, on the evening of July 6, as severe convective weather swept through parts of eastern Hubei.
As of the latest reports, around 14,600 people have been affected, with 11 dead, one missing, and 331 injured.
According to local authorities, heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, and tornadoes affected several cities in the province, including Huangshi, Huanggang, Ezhou, and Xianning.
The storm also damaged homes and infrastructure. Local reports said 22 rooms collapsed, while 4,855 rooms were damaged.
Meteorological experts said the tornado was caused by several weather systems overlapping. The remnants of Typhoon Maysak met the plum rain front over Hubei, bringing extremely warm and humid air. At the same time, colder air moved south from the northeast, causing a sharp collision between warm and cold air.
Strong vertical wind shear then helped the rotating air intensify, eventually forming the tornado.
In Huanggang’s urban area, authorities said the city was hit by a rare EF2-level tornado between 8:10 pm and 8:30 pm on July 6. The strongest winds reportedly exceeded Force 15.
The tornado swept through roads, residential communities, industrial areas, and logistics parks. Some of the worst damage was reported near Baota Avenue in Huangzhou District, where several heavy trucks were lifted or moved by the wind, with some reportedly thrown as far as 30 meters.
Residents described the tornado as sudden and extremely destructive. One local resident said it lasted only about a minute, but roadside trees were broken, cars were overturned, windows were shattered, and some window frames were blown off.
Another resident said the wind arrived with heavy rain and caused serious damage within seconds. In some residential compounds, balcony glass was shattered, security grilles were blown away, and outdoor vehicles were damaged.

A street vendor told local media that objects were flying everywhere during the storm. Some vendors were knocked down by the wind, and others were seriously injured.
Experts said tornadoes can be extremely dangerous because of their powerful winds and strong suction. Flying debris such as tree branches, metal pieces, glass, and roofing materials can also cause serious injuries.
