A six-year-old boy in central China was left alone in a hotel room for over two weeks, prompting hotel staff to step in and care for him like their own.
According to Henan Television, the boy, known as Chengcheng, checked into a hotel in Zhengzhou, Henan province, with his 25-year-old mother, surnamed Yue, in February.
At first, she would go out at night and return during the day, but by March she stopped coming back entirely and left no contact details.
For more than half a month, Chengcheng stayed by himself in the room. He spent time talking to hotel cleaners, often asking them for hugs, and would sit by the window watching outside.
In a moment that touched many online, he even asked the room's smart speaker if it had parents, before saying he wanted his mother to return.
Moved by his situation, hotel staff took turns caring for him, bringing him food and fruit. One cleaner, who grew especially close to him, became like a "temporary mother," spending time talking and playing with him every day.
Meanwhile, staff publicly called for Yue to come back, and local police and community workers joined efforts to locate her and confirm the boy's hometown.
On March 24, Yue returned and was reunited with her son, who ran into her arms.
She apologised, explaining that illness, fear of infecting him, and financial pressure had led her to leave.
Chengcheng comforted her, saying he did not blame her and that he could take care of himself. He added that he wanted to grow up quickly to protect her.
With help from authorities, they were later taken back to their hometown.
Before leaving, Chengcheng said he did not want to say goodbye to the hotel staff.
He was seen wiping a cleaner's tears, asking for her contact details, and promising to stay in touch.
Yue admitted her mistake and promised to work hard, settle the hotel bill, and raise her son properly. One emotional staff member told her they had initially been angry, but only hoped she would never leave him again, even offering her a free stay in the future.
Reports say Yue comes from a poor background, has a disabled younger sister whose treatment cost over 100,000 yuan, and is not married to the boy's father.
Due to the family's situation, local authorities have temporarily placed Chengcheng with a foster family in better financial condition.
He has since started school, attending kindergarten because he had not received any prior formal education.
Lawyers noted that Yue may have violated China's Law on the Protection of Minors, and in serious cases, such actions could be considered child abandonment, which carries a potential prison sentence of up to five years.
Online reactions were mixed. Some sympathised, noting Yue became a mother at 19 and may not have been prepared, while others insisted there is no justification for abandoning a child and hoped she returned out of genuine responsibility rather than public pressure.
