For many European expats, Müller is a household name known for its "one-stop-shop" convenience. The company confirmed during a recent investment conference in Pudong that it is currently in the site-selection phase, with plans to launch the Shanghai store in the fourth quarter of 2026.
What to Expect: A "Big Store" Experience
Unlike smaller convenience stores, Müller is known for its massive floor space and an extensive range of products. In Europe, their stores typically range from 400 to 4,500 square meters and carry up to 190,000 different items.
While the exact inventory for the Shanghai branch hasn't been finalized, the brand traditionally focuses on:
Personal Care & Beauty: Cosmetics, skincare, and high-end perfumes.
Health: Wellness products and health supplements.
Home & Family: Household goods, stationery, toys, and mother-and-baby products.
Ambitious Expansion Plans
The Shanghai opening is just the beginning. According to Chu Tongzhou, the head of Müller China, the company aims to use Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta as a hub to eventually expand across the country.
"We expect to open 200 to 500 stores in China within five years," Chu stated during the announcement.
A Growing German Presence
Müller joins a growing list of German retailers, like Aldi, that have successfully established a footprint in China. Despite the competitive landscape—facing off against local heavyweights like Hema and Yonghui—Müller is betting that its focus on "German quality" and its unique mix of drugstore and lifestyle products will appeal to residents looking for international brands.
