A 25-year-old Chinese woman, known online as Zhao Tiezhu, won third place and a cash prize after surviving 35 days on a wild island in Zhejiang province. She said the best part of the contest was losing 14kg — from 85kg down to 71kg.
Zhao joined the survival challenge on October 1 and stayed until November 5. She faced 40°C heat, insect bites, rough living conditions, and strong sunburn. Her prize total was 7,500 yuan.
She lost weight by eating mostly high-protein food she found on the island, such as crabs, sea urchins and abalones. She also caught, cooked, and ate 50 rats, and even made rat jerky. Zhao said the rats "taste good".
She quit the contest after a typhoon hit, saying she had reached her goals and wanted to sleep in her own bed.
Two men are still continuing the challenge to try to win the 50,000 yuan top prize.
Survival games are becoming more popular in China, including another big contest in Hunan with a 200,000 yuan reward.
Zhao said the result was better than she expected, and she hopes to join more survival contests. She added she wants to lose another 15kg in the next one.
