A foreign spy posed as a "perfect boyfriend" to seduce a Chinese government employee and steal state secrets, China's Ministry of State Security (MSS) disclosed on Friday, exposing a case of espionage through "emotional manipulation."
The target, identified only as Xiaoning, held a PhD and was considered a high-performing employee at a government agency. Yet professional success could not fill an emotional void stemming from family issues and loneliness. That made her an ideal target.
According to the MSS, a staff member from a foreign embassy approached her during a work event. Under the guise of a romantic relationship, he gradually probed into her work life—asking about office layout, document types, and colleague dynamics—all while posing as a caring partner.
As the relationship deepened, the foreign agent grew cold whenever Xiaoning failed to provide sensitive information. In an attempt to sustain the relationship, she began deliberately collecting state secrets and internal documents, which she then shared during their dates as "conversation topics."
The state security agency soon detected the leaks. After gathering evidence, they moved in to arrest Xiaoning and prevent further damage.
It was only during interrogation that Xiaoning discovered the truth: her "perfect boyfriend" was a married intelligence officer with children. The entire relationship had been a professional trap.
