Fly Across Shanghai in 10 Minutes for Just ¥59? The Future is Near

At this year's China International Import Expo (CIIE), Autoflight showcased its newly upgraded M1 passenger eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft), complete with a real-life simulation of a "low-altitude mobility hub" built inside the National Exhibition and Convention Center. Attendees experienced a seamless process from mobile ticket purchase to boarding—just like catching a regular flight, but much quicker and more futuristic.
From Hongqiao to Pudong in 10 Minutes
Yes, you read that right. The air route between Shanghai Hongqiao and Pudong airports could take just 10 minutes—and with a projected fare as low as ¥59.
According to staff at the event, the early-stage cost of flying with the M1 may be slightly higher than a traditional taxi. However, with scaled operations in the near future, prices are expected to drop significantly, making "air taxis" an affordable everyday option.
Autoflight's initial estimates suggest that urban routes within Shanghai may start from ¥50, and intercity journeys from as low as ¥100. Soon, it may take only 10 minutes to travel from the Expo center to any urban district and 30 to 60 minutes for intercity travel—at a cost comparable to standard taxi fares.
When Will Air Taxis Take Off?
The answer might surprise you—as early as next year.
On November 6, one of China's most advanced tilt-rotor eVTOL aircraft, the E20, made its public debut at the CIIE's tech pavilion.
With a range of 200 kilometers, cruising at 260 km/h and reaching a top speed of 320 km/h, the E20 can carry one pilot and four passengers. It boasts high load capacity, rapid travel, and operational efficiency.
Imagine this: a trip from Shanghai to Ningbo could take just 30 minutes. Shanghai to Nantong? Only 20 minutes.
And since the E20 runs purely on electricity and takes off vertically, it dramatically reduces infrastructure costs. Flying 100 kilometers could cost about the same as a taxi ride—making it a budget-friendly and sustainable mode of transport.
Shanghai may soon lead the way in urban air mobility, ushering in a new era of fast, affordable, and eco-friendly travel. For residents and visitors alike, the sky may no longer be the limit—it might just be the new highway.
