China is experiencing a rapid increase in influenza activity, with reported infection clusters reaching 955 in the week beginning November 10, though levels remain within the expected winter range, health authorities confirmed recently.
The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention data shows flu activity rising in both northern and southern regions, with the H3N2 subtype of influenza A now dominant—accounting for over 99% of sampled flu-like cases. The remainder consist of H1N1 and influenza B strains.
"The nation has entered a period of rapid increase in flu cases, with most regions seeing medium to high levels of virus circulation," said Peng Zhibin, a researcher at the China CDC, at a Friday press conference. Peng highlighted a notable rise in school and nursery outbreaks, with children and adolescents aged 5–14 showing significantly higher flu positivity rates than other age groups.
While a specific H3N2 subclade known as "K" has driven infections in parts of the Northern Hemisphere, including the UK, Canada, and Japan, Chinese experts reassured the public that the virus has not grown more severe.
"The flu virus is prone to minor mutations, but activity remains at a normal seasonal level," Peng stated. "No unknown or newly emerging pathogens have been detected."
Wang Dayan, director of the Chinese National Influenza Center, emphasized that this year's flu vaccine offers strong protection. "Over 95% of circulating strains are antigenically similar to the vaccine strains," she said, noting improved matching for H3N2 compared to previous years.
Health experts recommend vaccination before the flu season peaks to reduce severe symptoms and prevent clusters. Even those previously infected can benefit, as the trivalent vaccine covers all three circulating strains.
