Behzod Abduraimov Piano Recital @ Shanghai Concert Hall

Shanghai Event Guide : 50% Off Shows, Concerts & Exhibitions

Phenomenal technique, breathtaking delicacy, and immense musical depth—these are the hallmarks of Behzod Abduraimov, one of today's most commanding pianists.

The Uzbek-born virtuoso brings a richly contrasting program to the stage, opening with Brahms's autumnal Four Piano Pieces (Op. 119), followed by Czerny's dazzling Rode Variations and Liszt's monumental Dante Sonata—a thunderous vision of heaven and hell.

After intermission, Debussy's dreamy Suite bergamasque yields to Stravinsky's explosive Three Movements from Petrushka, a tour de force of rhythmic intensity.

Abduraimov performs with the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and Royal Concertgebouw, and records for Alpha Classics to critical acclaim—his most recent album earning a Gramophone Editor's Choice.

Don't miss this opportunity to hear "a pianist who simply transcends his instrument."

Paul Lewis Piano Recital @ Shanghai Concert Hall

Shanghai Event Guide : 50% Off Shows, Concerts & Exhibitions

Legendary British pianist Paul Lewis makes his highly anticipated Shanghai solo debut.

A reigning master of the Central European repertoire and CBE recipient, Lewis launches his global Mozart+ tour with a program that challenges the notion that Mozart's piano sonatas are overshadowed by his concertos.

The evening pairs two contrasting Mozart masterworks—the radiant 'C major Sonata K.330' and the dramatic 'C minor Sonata K.457'—with Poulenc's witty and translucent 'Improvisations' and Debussy's shimmering 'L'Isle joyeuse.'

Lewis reveals how Mozart's keyboard inventions echo through later composers, finding traces of his spirit in Poulenc's crisp playfulness and Debussy's sensuous fluidity.

A former Cliburn and Leeds jury chair, Lewis brings his signature clarity, depth, and unfussy eloquence to this carefully curated 90-minute journey—an unmissable opportunity to hear one of today's foremost pianists.

L’Alegria Que Passa, or Joy That Passes, is the triumphant farewell production from Spain’s legendary Dagoll Dagom, celebrating 50 years of groundbreaking theater.

This Catalan-language musical, a modern adaptation of a classic Modernist one-act play, arrives at Shanghai Culture Square for the first time.

When a touring troupe of artists descends upon a drab industrial town, Joan, the mayor’s son, meets Zaira, a hauntingly free singer.

Their unexpected encounter awakens long-buried dreams and disrupts the town’s fragile calm.

Winner of multiple 2023 Barcelona Theatre Awards (Best Musical, Best Adaptation, Best Performance), this phenomenon—167 sold-out shows in Barcelona—blends electronic music with live band, street dance, acrobatics, and physical theater.

Director Marc Rosich crafts a poetic, powerfully contemporary tribute to the desires that ignite and burn within us.

Fleeting yet indispensable, L’Alegria Que Passa captivates from the very first moment. A must-see for lovers of bold European musical theater.

The Marriage of Maria Braun @ Theatre YOUNG

Shanghai Event Guide : 50% Off Shows, Concerts & Exhibitions

Thomas Ostermeier's acclaimed stage adaptation of The Marriage of Maria Braun comes to Theatre YOUNG's Main Stage.

Based on Rainer Werner Fassbinder's iconic 1979 film—the first installment of his Federal Republic of Germany trilogy—the play follows a young woman navigating love, survival, and ambition in postwar West Germany.

Married in haste during the war's final days, Maria waits for her husband's return while building a new life amid the country's "economic miracle," only to discover that personal fate is never free from the rules of the era.

Ostermeier, artistic director of Berlin's Schaubühne since 1999, stages this production with playful theatricality: 27 characters are performed by just four male actors, and filmic effects are created live before the audience.

Described by critics as both a comedy and a tragedy, the production balances homage to Fassbinder with sharp contemporary resonance.

LUDWIG² – THE KING IS BACK @ Shanghai Culture Square

Shanghai Event Guide : 50% Off Shows, Concerts & Exhibitions

This winter, the majestic stage concert LUDWIG² – THE KING IS BACK returns to Shanghai Culture Square for an exclusive seven-performance run.

Following its acclaimed debut as a 2024 Year-end Hit, this grand production returns with significant upgrades: a stellar cast of leading stars, an expanded ensemble, and newly added songs and scenes from the original musical.

The symphony orchestra continues to anchor the work in classical grandeur, bringing the Bavarian fairy-tale king’s dreams and legends to life with resounding melodies.

The story follows Ludwig II, who ascended the throne at 18, only to face noble opposition for his pacifist ideals and obsession with Wagner’s operas.

Shanghai Event Guide : 50% Off Shows, Concerts & Exhibitions

Experience the Chinese premiere of the electrifying German original musical Einstein – A Matter of Time, landing at Shanghai Culture Square in December.

From acclaimed composer Frank Wildhorn (Jekyll & Hyde) and director-writer Gil Mehmert, this epic new production brings the extraordinary life of Albert Einstein to the stage—from his student days in Zurich and his revolutionary theory of relativity, to his turbulent marriage, anti-war activism, forced exile, and final years at Princeton.

Blending soaring rock-infused anthems with intimate lyricism, the score and stunning visual design trace the human story behind the icon: a man torn between genius and doubt, love and isolation, principle and fame.

Making a Scene | Inside China's Skate Culture @ Fotografiska Shanghai

Shanghai Event Guide : 50% Off Shows, Concerts & Exhibitions

Making a Scene: Inside China's Skate Culture presents the distinct creative practices of five photographers—James Andanson, wangchenweiii, Owen Yu, NankingJoe, and Rawyee Hwang—illustrating how photography actively constructs, enriches, and extends local skateboarding culture.

Skateboarding is more than a sport—it is an interconnected culture of visual arts, music, fashion, and lifestyle that continuously breeds diverse creativity.

It concerns not only the execution of a trick, but also the establishment of a uniquely street-oriented way of seeing.

While skaters reimagine and reinterpret the possibilities of their environment, photographers translate these spontaneous street moments into images.

Where these two creative forces collide on site, skate photography becomes—from its very inception—something much deeper than mere documentation.

Where the main exhibition Skate of the Art (see below) situates skateboarding within a expansive visual and cultural context, this China section focuses squarely on the creative practices of five individual photographers.

From the earliest known skate archival footage in China to the ongoing exploration of diverse urban landscapes and terrains; from the regional bonds and friendships forged through countless tours to the intergenerational legacy passed down among photographers—these varied lived experiences and ways of seeing weave together a visual trajectory spanning nearly 50 years of Chinese skate culture.

Almaty Skate Girls | Hailun Ma @ Fotografiska Shanghai

Shanghai Event Guide : 50% Off Shows, Concerts & Exhibitions

Almaty Skate Girls, a solo exhibition by photographer Hailun Ma, focuses on a group of young female skateboarders in Almaty, Kazakhstan, documenting how skateboarding has become part of their everyday lives for friendship, self-expression, and connection to the city.

Ma’s practice has long explored youth culture, identity, and the relationship between individuals and place.

In this series, she turns her camera towards everyday moments: girls skating together, waiting for friends, sharing food, exchanging glances, or simply talking on the street.

The series also pays close attention to clothing and gesture. In Ma’s photographs, clothing is part of the girls’ everyday language of expressing individuality and shaping a sense of identity.

Almaty Skate Girls continues Ma’s ongoing interest in the lives and cultural expressions of younger generations.

Through images rooted in streets, communities, and everyday encounters, the series traces the connections between the girls and the city of Almaty, recording how they blend cross-regional cultural influences into their own living language.

Skate of the Art | Skateboarding Across Cultures @ Fotografiska Shanghai

Shanghai Event Guide : 50% Off Shows, Concerts & Exhibitions

Skate of the Art: Skateboarding Across Cultures is a major group exhibition that redefines skateboarding not merely as a sport, but as a global visual and cultural language.

The show traces the culture’s evolution from the sun-drenched empty pools of 1970s California to the dynamic streets of contemporary cities worldwide.

Featuring over 20 photographers from five continents—including iconic figures like Hugh Holland and Ed Templeton, alongside global documentarians such as Luisa Dörr and local Chinese artists like Jedi Zhou and Jeff Yiu—the exhibition charts skateboarding’s migration and its adaptation across diverse cultures.

Highlights include the historic image of Danny Way jumping the Great Wall and intimate portraits of communities from Bolivia to Beijing.

Beyond photography, the exhibition integrates multimedia installations and street-textured environments to create an immersive experience.

As a cultural partnership with Nike SB, the show extends beyond the gallery with public programs, celebrating how the camera lens has not only documented but actively shaped skate culture.

It is an invitation to explore the freedom, creativity, and cross-cultural dialogue that define this enduring global youth movement.

Robert Zhao Renhui | Trying to Remember a Tree @ Fotografiska Shanghai

Shanghai Event Guide : 50% Off Shows, Concerts & Exhibitions

Trying to Remember a Tree is a contemplative solo exhibition by Singaporean artist Robert Zhao Renhui—the representative for the Singapore Pavilion at the 2024 Venice Biennale.

The show centers on the complete lifecycle of a single fallen rain tree, transforming overlooked urban debris into a profound meditation on nature, memory, and human perception.

Through five interconnected bodies of work—spanning photography, moving image, surveillance footage, and installation—Zhao presents the meticulous documentation of 28,017 individual leaves, severed trunk fragments, and 24-hour monitoring of the tree's decomposition.

In modern cities, dead trees are routinely cleared as waste; Zhao's patient observation reclaims these remnants, inviting us to truly attend rather than merely see.

His guiding axiom—"without looking at a tree, there is no forest"—grounds the exhibition in a micro-level focus that resists grand ecological narratives in favor of intimate, grounded encounters.

Running until November 6, 2026, the exhibition asks viewers to slow down and reconnect with the vital, often invisible entanglements between urban life and the natural world.

It is a quiet but powerful reminder that remembering a single tree might be the first step toward remembering our shared ecosystem.

Thomas Sauvin | Beijing Silvermine: Archive Anthology

Shanghai Event Guide : 50% Off Shows, Concerts & Exhibitions

Thomas Sauvin's Beijing Silvermine: Archive Anthology celebrates 15 years of one of the world's most important vernacular photography archives.

Curated by Holly Roussell, the exhibition brings together over 1,500 salvaged 35mm negatives, books, installations, and collaborative artworks.

The archive originated from a recycling plant on the outskirts of Beijing, where Sauvin rescued millions of anonymous film negatives destined for silver extraction.

These images document Chinese daily life from the Reform and Opening-Up period to the early 2000s—capturing aspirations, wedding rituals, and material culture in a rapidly changing society.

The exhibition unfolds across four sections: a monumental archive installation, a reconstruction of Sauvin's studio, a tribute to the cult photobook Until Death Do Us Part, and collaborations with artists including Lei Lei and Kensuke Koike.

Reflecting Fotografiska's mission to inspire new perspectives, the show demonstrates how images made to record ordinary life can acquire profound cultural meaning long after their original context has faded.

Tony Oursler | mAcHiNe CrYsTaL @ Fotografiska Shanghai

Shanghai Event Guide : 50% Off Shows, Concerts & Exhibitions

American multimedia artist Tony Oursler presents mAcHiNe CrYsTaL, a major solo exhibition now on view at Fotografiska Shanghai.

The show features large-scale immersive optical installations created specifically for the space, using crystal as a medium to bridge natural geometry, digital technology, and artificial intelligence.

At the heart of the exhibition is a sculptural arrangement of faceted crystal structures that function as both physical objects and dynamic projection surfaces.

Multicolored digital imagery—including live-action footage, hand-drawn animations, and AI-generated content—reflects and refracts across the crystals, creating a constantly shifting perceptual field that changes with the viewer's position.

Inspired by crystalline formations in nature and the role of crystals as the synchronized "heartbeat" of digital devices, Oursler asks whether technology can lead audiences back to nature.
