According to a police report released on September 28 by the Panyu Branch of the Guangzhou Public Security Bureau, the incident took place at 9:40 p.m. on an internal road near Zhonghuan East Road in Xiaoguwei Subdistrict.

Authorities responded swiftly after receiving reports that a car had struck two pedestrians within a residential area on campus. Emergency personnel rushed to the scene, and the driver, identified as Mr. Jin—a faculty member of SCUT's School of Arts—was taken into custody. One of the victims succumbed to injuries despite rescue efforts, while the other has since been discharged from the hospital.

Police have ruled out alcohol and drug use, and the case remains under investigation.

Eyewitness accounts reveal that the accident occurred between the D4 teacher dormitory and the C3 student dormitory, a narrow campus road where two vehicles can barely pass each other. A loud crash startled nearby students, many of whom rushed to the scene. Some immediately called emergency services, and campus staff along with police officers arrived shortly after.

According to a student familiar with the situation, the deceased was Lu, a first-year electrical engineering major in SCUT's Class of 2025. She was from Guangxi Province and had recently been elected class monitor. Most heartbreakingly, the accident occurred on her 18th birthday, just 20 days after starting her university journey.

The collision happened near a residential waste station, only about 100 meters from Lu's dormitory. Some believe the accident occurred while she was taking out the trash after celebrating her birthday. The second victim, a dance major, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Videos circulated online showing a foreign teacher at the scene. Social media users clarified that the foreign staff member was attempting to protect the victims from being photographed and had no involvement in the incident.

The incident has sparked public outrage and widespread grief online. Many netizens voiced deep sorrow over the young life lost, especially on such a meaningful day. There is growing concern over campus traffic safety, with calls urging universities to take stronger measures to regulate on-campus driving and protect student lives.
