Shanghai Sets New August Heat Record as Residents Endure Scorching Temperatures
Residents across Shanghai experienced intense heat on Sunday as the city's municipal meteorological bureau issued a yellow alert for high temperatures early in the day. By approximately 1:00 p.m., temperatures at the Xujiahui monitoring station had surged past 35 degrees Celsius, according to data from the Shanghai Meteorological Service.
The prolonged heatwave added yet another sweltering day to what has become a record-breaking month for high temperatures. According to Shanghai Fabu, the official WeChat account of the Shanghai municipal government, the city has now recorded 27 high-temperature days in August—a new record for the most in a single August since records began.
Under China's weather alert system, a yellow alert is the second-lowest in a four-tier color-coded warning system, indicating temperatures are expected to reach 35°C or higher within 24 hours. The continued heat has prompted authorities to remind residents to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak sunlight hours, and take precautions against heat-related illnesses.
Photos shared by locals and media outlets captured scenes of city dwellers seeking shade in parks, cooling off with handheld fans and ice-cold drinks, and taking refuge indoors in air-conditioned spaces.
As the heatwave shows few signs of easing, meteorologists have urged the public to remain vigilant and stay tuned for updates on weather advisories.
