Travel Simplified :Beijing Subway Accepts All Major Global Cards!

-

Beijing's urban subway system has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the world's first to offer network-wide coverage of the five major card schemes, including UnionPay, Mastercard, Visa, JCB, and American Express. Starting from Sunday, the subway system now supports contactless tap-and-go access and ticket purchases for overseas-issued JCB and American Express cards, enhancing payment convenience and service quality for inbound tourists.

This service upgrade is applicable across all 29 operational lines, 523 stations, and suburban lines, including two airport lines, enabling tap-and-go access at all fare gates. Passengers can simply tap their cards on the turnstile's sensor for instant access, eliminating the need to buy tickets ahead of time or download an app.

Card owners can also use self-service ticket vending machines to purchase single-journey tickets for multiple companions. The ticket vending machine software has been upgraded to support tap-and-go purchases with the new card types without changing the hardware. This upgrade provides foreign passengers with a fully integrated, convenient payment environment covering all scenarios.

Additionally, if foreign passengers encounter over-distance or overtime situations while using single-journey tickets, they can use overseas-issued bank cards to adjust fares at self-service machines, which reduces communication barriers and enhances travel convenience.

This advancement follows the support for Mastercard and Visa in September 2023 and marks another major improvement in Beijing's transportation sector for payment convenience. Since the debut of the Chinese mainland's first overseas-issued bank card tap-and-go service on September 13, 2024, Beijing's urban subway system has enabled effective use of bank cards from over 130 countries and regions with zero complaints, showcasing the system's commitment to inclusivity and ease of use for all passengers.
