A 28-year-old Chinese PhD student, Zhenhao Zou, has been sentenced to a minimum of 22 years in prison for drugging and raping 10 women during his studies at University College London. Following his conviction in March, it was revealed that there is evidence of suspected attacks on an additional 50 women in the UK and China, as uncovered from a collection of trophy videos kept by Zou as a memento of his crimes.
The Inner London Crown Court heard that Zou had offered to undergo chemical castration to avoid a life sentence. However, Judge Rosina Cottage stated that he would always pose a risk to the public due to his 'sexual interest' in 'exerting power and control over women,' adding that the victims were merely 'pieces in an elaborate game.'
Chemical castration, which involves taking two drugs—one to curb sexual thoughts and the other to reduce testosterone and libido—is currently being piloted in southwest England and is voluntary in countries such as Germany, France, Sweden, and Denmark. Some sex offenders actively seek it out. Recently, Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced that the existing pilot would be expanded to 20 prisons.
