Two Arrested for Peeing in Shanghai Hot Pot

Two individuals were detained for urinating in a hot pot at a well-known Shanghai restaurant and posting the video online, Shanghai police announced on Saturday.

The restaurant chain Haidilao condemned the act, assuring customers that all hot pot equipment and dining utensils had been replaced to maintain food safety and hygiene.

A viral video on Chinese social media showed a man standing on a dining table and urinating into a boiling hot pot.

According to the Huangpu Public Security Bureau, the incident occurred on February 24 when two intoxicated 17-year-old males, surnamed Tang and Wu, traveled to Shanghai from other provinces and dined in a private room at the restaurant. Wu later uploaded the video online.

Both individuals were placed under administrative detention following an investigation.

Haidilao stated that the restaurant underwent thorough cleaning and disinfection, and customers can monitor kitchen operations through its "Bright Kitchen" initiative for transparency.

"We strongly condemn this unethical and illegal behavior," the company said, urging the public not to spread personal information or harass the individuals and their families, as they are minors. "They should have the chance to learn from their mistakes," Haidilao added.
