A foreign teacher in Sichuan was puzzled by frequent police visits—until one call changed everything. Azevedo Edgar (a pseudonym), a foreign teacher living in Sichuan due to both work and love, never expected his interactions with the local police to be so frequent—especially when they started showing up at his workplace and home.
According to Sichuan's Public Security Bureau on February 12, officers frequently visited Azevedo's workplace and home, personally explaining the latest policies regarding foreign nationals in China. While these efforts were meant to inform and assist him, Azevedo couldn't help but grow suspicious. For him, having several police officers appear regularly at his door felt intrusive, and he began to feel increasingly uncomfortable. However, things took a turn recently when Azevedo's visa renewal was approaching. Faced with a complicated process, he felt overwhelmed and unsure of where to begin. Just as he was planning to reach out for help, he received another call—this time from the Immigration Management Unit. After a lengthy conversation, Azevedo gradually opened up about his frustrations and confusion regarding the renewal procedures. The officers, demonstrating patience and understanding, carefully explained the process and provided him with precise instructions on what documents were needed. Their guidance significantly streamlined the process, saving him considerable time and effort.
In the end, Azevedo admitted, "It was your enthusiasm that won me over. Thank you." He now understands and appreciates the police's proactive outreach, realizing it was meant to help and not to harass.
