A 24-year-old man from Yunnan province in southwestern China, who spent much of his childhood facing hardship, loneliness, and bullying, experienced an unforgettable act of kindness when hundreds of strangers responded to his wedding invitation.

Xu lost his father when he was just three years old. Shortly afterwards, his mother remarried, leaving him and his older brother in the care of their grandmother. When she passed away, the two brothers had little choice but to support themselves.

Xu worked various jobs, including construction, food delivery, and street vending. Despite his difficult upbringing, he never gave up on building a better future.

After meeting his future wife online, he spent three years working and saving approximately 167,500 yuan (US$25,000) to cover their wedding expenses and traditional bride price.

However, as his wedding approached, Xu had one heartbreaking concern: he feared that hardly anyone would attend.

Having been bullied and looked down upon in his village for growing up without his parents, Xu wanted his wedding day to be different. He hoped to celebrate with people who would make him feel accepted and respected.

So he took a chance and posted a video on Douyin, China's version of TikTok, inviting complete strangers to his wedding on October 31.

He never imagined what would happen next.

His video went viral, receiving more than 600,000 likes. Within just two days, nearly 200 strangers travelled from different parts of China to celebrate with him.

And they didn't arrive empty-handed.

Some brought household appliances, flowers, and wedding gifts. Others donated roasted pigs, arranged private chefs, or arrived in luxury cars to join the wedding procession.

One farmer brought 100 chickens and reassured Xu that he was now surrounded by family. Another guest travelled more than 2,200 kilometres from Tibet simply to congratulate him.

Overwhelmed by the generosity, Xu explained that he had only hoped people would attend and share his happiness. He never expected so many gifts or so much love.

The gathering became so large that local authorities helped manage traffic and relocated the celebration to a spacious public square.

For a young man who had spent much of his childhood feeling unwanted, his wedding became a powerful reminder that kindness can come from unexpected places.

One online commenter beautifully captured the emotion behind the story:

"He may have invited strangers to his wedding, but perhaps he was really celebrating the lonely little boy he once was."

What began as a simple invitation became a celebration of compassion, generosity, and human connection.
