A young man from Yunnan Province posted an open invitation online, welcoming strangers to attend and celebrate his wedding.

To his surprise, nearly 20,000 people he had never met traveled from across China to celebrate his big day, turning an ordinary wedding into an incredible gathering filled with warmth and kindness.

The groom, known online as Xiaoxiaoxu, comes from Luowang Town in Yiliang County, Zhaotong, Yunnan Province. His childhood was far from easy. He lost his father at the age of three, and his mother remarried when he was five. His grandmother passed away from illness not long afterward, leaving him and his older brother, who is three years his senior, to depend on each other as they grew up.

After dating his girlfriend for three years, Xiaoxu had saved more than 160,000 yuan (approximately $22,500) through years of careful spending to pay for their wedding. With few relatives to invite and fearing the ceremony would feel lonely. So, on October 25, he posted an invitation online, sincerely welcoming anyone who wished to join them and share in their happiness.

At first, he expected no more than 20 or 30 online guests to show up. But his difficult childhood and heartfelt wish touched thousands of people, and videos about his story quickly went viral. On the wedding day, people began arriving from all directions.

According to media reports, nearly 20,000 people had gathered by October 30. Hotels throughout Luowang Town were fully booked, with visitors struggling to find accommodation. Roads were filled with a steady stream of vehicles bearing license plates from different parts of China.

Many guests went beyond simply attending the celebration and volunteered to help with the preparations. Some people working in the catering industry brought their own cooking equipment and joined the kitchen staff. Others arrived with truckloads of pork, rice, cooking oil and other supplies. A number of generous local businesses even offered to cover the couple’s wedding styling, hair and makeup.

The scale of the celebration far exceeded Xiaoxiaoxu’s expectations. The original plan of just 20 to 30 banquet tables was expanded to 400, yet there still were not enough seats for everyone who wanted to attend.

Local village officials, police, firefighters and tourism authorities stepped in to coordinate the arrangements. The wedding venue was eventually relocated to a large cultural square at a local resettlement site, allowing nearly 10,000 guests to be accommodated.

The unusual gathering was a heartwarming example of strangers coming together to show kindness. Yet the sudden online fame also brought unexpected trouble for the newlyweds.

Some content creators rushed to the venue to livestream the event and attract online traffic. Cameras were repeatedly pushed in front of the couple, disrupting the wedding proceedings. Some even used the occasion to promote products through livestream shopping. Meanwhile, numerous fake social media accounts emerged, impersonating Xiaoxiaoxu and his family members in an attempt to cash in on the viral attention.By October 30, Douyin, China's version of TikTok, had taken action against more than 100 accounts impersonating Xiaoxiaoxu and his relatives.

We sincerely wish the newlyweds a lifetime of happiness. Kindness deserves to be shared, but enthusiasm should also come with boundaries. Whether offering congratulations or lending a helping hand, people should remember to respect the couple's privacy and avoid disrupting their lives. After all, genuine kindness also means knowing when to give others space.
