A heartwarming story from China has touched many people online, showing that kindness and family bonds can survive even after a marriage ends.

Lin, a woman from Henan province, divorced her husband 12 years ago. However, she never stopped treating his mother as family and has continued calling her “Mum” for the past 17 years.

After her former father-in-law passed away in 2024 and her ex-husband died in 2025, Lin became worried about her elderly former mother-in-law, who was living alone in Guangdong province.

Despite being remarried, Lin travelled more than 1,000 kilometres to invite the woman, now in her 70s, to live with her, her current husband and her two children.

At first, the elderly woman refused because she did not want to become a burden. But Lin insisted, reassuring her that she would always have a place in their home.

Lin explained that she married into the family when she was just 20 years old. Throughout her marriage and even after the divorce, her former in-laws treated her with love, respect and kindness.

Her former mother-in-law continued checking on her well-being and encouraging her not to work too hard, even years after the marriage ended.

“Divorce does not mean becoming strangers. I must repay the kindness I received,” Lin said.

Her current husband fully supports her decision, as does her own mother, who said Lin's former in-laws had always treated her daughter exceptionally well.

The elderly woman eventually agreed to move in, especially because it meant spending more time with her grandchildren.

The story has received widespread praise online, with many people admiring Lin's loyalty, gratitude and compassion.

Sometimes, a marriage may end, but the love, respect and kindness shared between families can last a lifetime.
