China : Disabled Man Repays 500 Yuan, Returns 1,000 Yuan 8 Years Later

An act of kindness worth just 500 yuan has turned into an extraordinary story of friendship, gratitude and generosity in China.

A heartwarming story from China has touched millions online after a young man with a physical disability travelled to thank a woman who helped him when he was struggling to afford food eight years earlier.

In 2018, Wang Shuming, an 18-year-old from Shandong province in eastern China, was facing one of the most difficult periods of his life.

Wang had lived with physical disabilities since suffering a serious fever during childhood. The illness left him with difficulty walking steadily, speaking clearly and moving his hands.

Despite these challenges, Wang was determined to become independent. He left home hoping to earn a living and support himself, but life proved much harder than he had expected.

At one point, he was so desperate that he posted a video on social media explaining that he had no money and could not afford meals.

He never imagined that a stranger hundreds of kilometres away would change his life.

A Stranger Who Offered Help Without Expecting Anything

Zhu Xuewei, then 33, owned a clothing shop in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province in central China.

After seeing Wang's video, she contacted him and offered financial assistance.

She immediately transferred 500 yuan, approximately US$75, to help him buy food.

Wang was initially reluctant to accept the money. He refused several times, but Zhu insisted that he take it.

Although the amount was relatively small, it came at a moment when Wang desperately needed help.

Once his situation improved, Wang tried to return the money. However, Zhu refused to accept repayment.

Determined to show his appreciation, Wang eventually sent her 12 boxes of apples grown by his family.

What began as a simple act of generosity soon developed into a lasting friendship.

Eight Years of Friendship Without Meeting

Over the following eight years, Wang and Zhu remained in contact, even though they had never met face to face.

Their relationship was built not on money or obligations but on small, thoughtful gestures.

Every year, Wang sent Zhu products from his hometown, including apples, cherries and seafood.

Zhu, in return, regularly sent clothing to Wang and his family. She also helped promote the apples his family sold, hoping to improve their business.

Neither wanted to burden the other with personal problems. Instead, they expressed their appreciation through gifts, encouragement and continued support.

As the years passed, Wang gradually improved his financial situation and became more independent.

Eventually, he felt he no longer needed Zhu's assistance.

He contacted her to express his gratitude and explained that she did not need to continue spending her time helping promote his family's apples.

Zhu was delighted to hear that his circumstances had improved.

During their conversation, however, she briefly mentioned that her own life had not been going particularly well over the previous two years.

She did not ask Wang for money or assistance.

But Wang remembered her words.

A Surprise Visit That Changed Everything

On October 17, 2026, Wang travelled to Wuhan to visit Zhu at her clothing shop.

It was the first time they had met in person since their friendship began eight years earlier.

The meeting was brief, and Wang did not immediately explain the real purpose of his visit.

After leaving her shop, he sent her a message revealing that he had secretly left behind a traditional Chinese red envelope containing 1,000 yuan, approximately US$150.

The amount was exactly double what Zhu had given him in 2018.

He hoped the money would help ease some of the financial difficulties she was experiencing.

Zhu was surprised and deeply moved by the gesture.

She repeatedly tried to return the money, just as Wang had once attempted to return her original donation.

But this time, Wang was the one who refused.

He explained that he wanted to repay the kindness she had shown him when he had nothing.

Although Wang wished he could offer more financial support, he said his own resources remained limited.

Nevertheless, he was determined to help in whatever way he could.

For Zhu, the gesture was worth far more than the money itself.

She invited Wang back, treated him to dinner, showed him around Wuhan and took photographs together to remember their first meeting.

Why Zhu Helped a Stranger in the First Place

When asked why she had decided to help Wang eight years earlier, Zhu revealed that her generosity was inspired by an experience from her own youth.

When she was just 17, another woman had helped her through an extremely difficult period.

Zhu said that without this assistance, her life might have fallen apart.

She never forgot the kindness she received.

Years later, when she saw Wang struggling to buy food, she recognised an opportunity to help someone just as another person had once helped her.

Her generosity was not limited to Wang.

For years, Zhu had also been donating clothing to charitable organisations to support people in need.

She believed that helping others should not depend on whether they could repay the favour.

Ironically, when she later experienced difficulties herself, the person she had once helped became someone who offered support in return.

The Story Touches Hearts Across China

After the story was reported by Chinese media and shared online, many internet users praised the friendship between Wang and Zhu.

Some were impressed by Wang's determination to repay a debt of gratitude after eight years.

Others admired Zhu for helping a stranger without expecting anything in return.

One commenter said that kindness eventually finds its way back to the person who gives it.

Another observed that although neither Wang nor Zhu had exchanged large amounts of money, their friendship represented something much more valuable.

For Wang, the original 500 yuan represented hope at a time when he could barely afford to eat.

For Zhu, the 1,000 yuan red envelope represented proof that her kindness had never been forgotten.

She said she intended to treasure the envelope and that Wang's determination and hardworking attitude would continue to inspire her.

A Reminder That Small Acts of Kindness Can Last a Lifetime

The story has attracted attention not because of the money involved, but because of the extraordinary connection between two people who were once complete strangers.

In 2018, Zhu helped a young man who was struggling to survive.

For eight years, they maintained a friendship through simple gestures, thoughtful gifts and mutual respect.

Then, in October 2026, their roles unexpectedly reversed.

Wang, who had once needed help, was finally able to offer some support to the woman who had believed in him.

There is another remarkable element to the story: Zhu helped Wang because someone had helped her when she was younger.

That means the generosity Wang received was itself part of a chain of kindness that had begun years before they ever met.

One woman helped a 17-year-old girl. That girl grew up and helped an 18-year-old stranger. Eight years later, that stranger returned to help her.

Their story is a powerful reminder that an act of kindness does not need to be expensive or extraordinary to change someone's life.

Sometimes, even 500 yuan, given at exactly the right moment, can create a friendship that lasts a lifetime.
