A restaurant chain owner in Jiaozuo, Henan province, rewarded top-performing employees with brand-new, fully paid BMWs worth 300,000 yuan to keep them warm during commutes.
Tags:A restaurant owner in central China has attracted widespread attention after giving several of her top-performing employees brand-new BMWs, saying she wanted to make their daily commutes safer and more comfortable.
Ma Yanli, who runs a beef hotpot restaurant chain headquartered in Jiaozuo, Henan province, bought the cars for employees who had performed particularly well at work. The employees collected their new vehicles on September 24.
Each BMW was worth around 300,000 yuan (US$45,000), according to Henan TV. Ma reportedly paid for the cars in full and registered them directly in the employees' names.
One recipient, employee Li Jie, said she was shocked when Ma told her they were going to a BMW showroom. “I am so thrilled! I dared not think about this before,” Li said, according to local media. She initially thought Ma was joking when she was told she would receive a “big toy”.
Li left the showroom with a brand-new white BMW and did not have to pay anything for it. Ma also did not require her to sign an agreement in exchange for the vehicle. The unusual reward reportedly came from a concern Ma had developed during the previous winter.
Like many of her colleagues, Li normally travelled to work on an electric scooter. One particularly cold morning, Ma noticed that Li had arrived at the restaurant with a red face, purple ears and stiff hands after riding through the cold wind. The sight stayed with Ma, who began thinking about how she could make the commute easier for her employees. “I can’t bear to see them suffer in the cold,” Ma said in comments reported by local media.
Ma said she believes the success of her restaurant business is closely connected to the efforts of her employees. Rather than seeing the company’s success as something belonging only to the owner, she believes workers who help create that success should be able to enjoy it as well.
The story quickly attracted attention online, with many people praising Ma's approach to rewarding employees. Some commenters described the gifts as an unusually generous way of recognising hard work, while others said the story showed how employee benefits can go beyond traditional bonuses.
The BMW gifts also sparked discussion about workplace culture in China, where employee rewards can range from cash bonuses and company trips to cars and other high-value gifts.
For Ma's employees, however, the reward appears to have a much more practical meaning: no more freezing rides to work on an electric scooter during the winter.
