China Southern Flight CZ8403 Prune Juice Incident Leads to Toilet RushCabin Pressure: Passengers Make Desperate Dash for Toilets After Prune Juice Surprise

More than 100 travellers reportedly faced an unexpected mid-air bathroom rush after prune juice was served on a flight with just two lavatories.

A routine drinks service reportedly turned into an uncomfortable race for the toilets aboard a China Southern Airlines flight after passengers were served prune juice — a beverage well known for its natural laxative effect.

The bizarre incident was reported aboard flight CZ8403 from Wuhan to Ürümqi, where passengers said 100ml packs of prune juice were offered during the journey.

According to passenger accounts shared on Chinese social media, some travellers apparently mistook the dark-coloured drink for ordinary grape juice and finished it without giving it much thought.

That decision reportedly became considerably more important a short while later.

Passengers claimed that people began heading for the aircraft's lavatories one after another, eventually creating queues in the aisle. With more than 100 passengers reportedly sharing just two toilets, the situation quickly became the subject of jokes online.

One traveller reportedly questioned why prune juice had been served on an aircraft with so few bathrooms, while other social-media users jokingly described the experience as an unexpected in-flight digestive cleanse.

Prune juice naturally contains sorbitol, a sugar alcohol that can draw water into the intestines and promote bowel movements. For some people, consuming enough of it can lead to loose stools or diarrhoea.

Reports even claimed that some passengers continued searching for toilets after the aircraft landed, although the scale of the reaction has not been independently confirmed.

Airline Questions Online Claims

China Southern Airlines later responded to media enquiries, saying it could not immediately verify all of the claims surrounding the particular flight.

The airline explained that drinks vary between flights and that prune juice is not served on every service. Other options can include coffee, regular fruit juice, soy milk and water.

The carrier also disputed suggestions that a large-scale outbreak of diarrhoea had definitely taken place, with reports indicating that some circulating images and descriptions may have exaggerated the situation.

Still, the story quickly went viral for one simple reason: serving a drink famous for getting the digestive system moving to a cabin full of passengers sharing two toilets sounds like the setup to a comedy nobody wants to experience at 30,000 feet.

Moral of the story? When the flight attendant offers you a mysterious purple juice, it might be worth checking the label before finishing the whole carton.
