The man, known by his surname Ru, had spent roughly 21 years collecting recyclable items and scrap to support himself in Changde, Hunan province. In late September, local social assistance workers helped him obtain a bank card connected to the pension account, revealing a balance of more than 424,000 yuan.

Overcome with emotion, Ru said he had never imagined receiving such a large sum and expressed his appreciation to the social workers and government departments that helped uncover the funds.

The unexpected discovery could now give him far greater financial security after more than two decades of living through scavenging work.
