Planning to look for the Mid-Autumn moon in Shanghai tonight? The latest forecast brings some good news: clouds may come and go, but they should not stop you from seeing it.
There is one surprise, however. Although today is Mid-Autumn Festival, the moon will not reach its fullest point until early Sunday morning.

Can Shanghai see the moon tonight?
According to the Shanghai station of China Weather, the city will be cloudy to overcast on September 25, with brief showers possible in some areas.
The rain is expected to remain relatively light. The official update says the moon may appear and disappear behind the clouds, but conditions should still allow people to enjoy the view tonight.
Temperatures are unusually warm for the holiday. Shanghai is expected to reach around 32°C, with relative humidity between 50% and 80%.

When should you look up?
Astronomical tables for Shanghai place today’s moonrise at approximately 4:53 pm. It should be much easier to see after the sky becomes dark, provided the clouds open.
The moon is expected to be highest in the sky at approximately 10:53 pm. You do not need a telescope: choose an open location with a clear view and check the sky whenever the clouds begin to break.

Why isn’t the moon full on Mid-Autumn Festival?
Mid-Autumn Festival always falls on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar. But that does not mean the astronomical full moon must occur on the same day.
The moon travels around Earth in an elliptical orbit, so its speed changes. The interval between a new moon and a full moon can therefore vary. A full moon may fall on the 14th, 15th, 16th or even 17th day of a lunar month.
This year, the moon becomes completely full at 12:49 am on September 27, the 17th day of the lunar month. This relatively uncommon timing is described in Chinese as “十五的月亮十七圆” — “the moon of the fifteenth becomes full on the seventeenth.”

Tonight’s moon will already be more than 98% illuminated, according to Xinhua, so the difference will be almost impossible to notice with the naked eye.
Rain is coming later in the holiday
A more noticeable spell of rain is expected from the afternoon of September 26 through the morning of September 27. Some areas may receive heavy rain and thunderstorms.
If you want to see the Mid-Autumn moon, tonight may offer the better opportunity. Check the latest local forecast before travelling to a riverside or other outdoor viewing location.
If the clouds move aside tonight, remember to look up.
