A Chinese woman won a ¥10,000 McDonald's voucher via an Alipay overseas-travel promotion in Hong Kong and used it to buy meals for strangers, sanitation workers, elderly customers and children over 24 hours, later receiving an extra ¥1,000 in vouchers from McDonald's.

The woman, who shared her experience on Xiaohongshu, said she initially had no idea what to do after discovering that she had won the prize through an Alipay overseas-travel promotion. She found the situation amusing and casually posted about it online. After receiving suggestions from a large number of enthusiastic followers, she decided to turn the prize into “something crazy and fun.”
Her plan was simple: use the McDonald’s vouchers to buy meals for strangers and people who might need a little kindness.
As a self-described introvert, she said she felt extremely awkward standing outside a McDonald’s restaurant trying to approach strangers and offer to pay for their meals. She ended up switching between Chinese and English while trying to explain what she was doing.
Fortunately, the first round went smoothly. Encouraged by people’s surprised and happy reactions, she decided to continue.

Worried that the staff at the first McDonald’s might become exhausted by the sudden large order, she moved to a second restaurant. Kind-hearted netizens who had seen her post also came to help, continuing to spread the kindness by buying meals for sanitation workers and others working hard.

The experience also took a physical toll. That night, she was too excited and nervous to sleep. She said she had forgotten to eat dinner and later developed severe stomach pain. She went out late at night to buy medicine, telling herself, “I can’t collapse. So many people are looking forward to this.” The following day, she continued giving away meals around Hong Kong.
Finding sanitation workers was more difficult than she expected, and some people were hesitant to accept free food. She eventually gave meals to people near subway entrances before returning to McDonald’s restaurants, where she gave food to elderly customers and children.
She later used the final ¥1,000 of the voucher allowance around Tsim Sha Tsui, partly because some followers had travelled specifically to meet her. She worried that people might make a wasted trip and feel disappointed.

She said: “I have never been surrounded by such a great, genuine wave of kindness and love. As many people have said, this is something I will always look back on as one of the happiest and proudest experiences of my life.
I really want to thank Alipay and Hong Kong, as well as everyone who supported me. I’m really just a ‘messenger of good luck.’ I didn’t spend much of my own money, and I could never have used all the vouchers myself anyway, so why not share the happiness?
Thank you to Alipay for creating this opportunity, and thank you to Hong Kong for giving so many people the chance to experience happiness and kindness.
Today, a woman held my hand and said something that brought me to tears. She told me that because of what I did, she realized that when you are lucky, you can pass that luck on to others, and she wants to learn from me and do similar acts of kindness.”

After McDonald’s officially learned about her story, the company gave her an additional ¥1,000 worth of McDonald’s meal vouchers. Since she was unable to find many sanitation workers in Hong Kong, she plans to use another ¥1,000 of McDonald’s vouchers to buy meals for sanitation workers in mainland China. She also hopes to use the remaining vouchers to treat her family and friends.
For her, a promotional prize worth ¥10,000 became something more than free food: it became a 24-hour experience of strangers helping strangers, and a reminder that one person’s good fortune can sometimes become someone else’s happiness.
