China now lets foreign visitors register accommodation online via the National Immigration Administration, WeChat or Alipay, avoiding police station visits. Hotels still register guests automatically, but those in private homes, rentals or non-hotel stays must register within 24 hours of arrival or after moving cities; failure may bring a warning or fine up to 2,000 yuan.

Under China’s Exit and Entry Administration Law, foreigners are generally required to register their place of accommodation with local authorities within 24 hours of arriving. The rule also applies when a foreign visitor moves from one city or region to another.
Those who fail to complete the registration may receive a warning or face a fine of up to 2,000 yuan.
For travellers staying in hotels, registration is normally handled automatically by the hotel. However, foreigners staying in private homes, rented apartments or other non-hotel accommodation traditionally had to visit a local police station to complete the process.
That procedure has now been simplified.
Foreign visitors can register their accommodation through the National Immigration Administration’s website, its official mobile application, or related services available through WeChat and Alipay. The registration can be completed either by the foreign visitor or by the person hosting them.
Foreign nationals who own property in China or hold certain residency documents may not need to repeat the registration process every time they return, depending on their circumstances.
The online system was initially tested from March 20 in several provinces and regions, including Hebei, Zhejiang and Sichuan. Immigration authorities later said the trial had made registration easier and more organised.
Officials have said the online service will gradually be expanded across China, with the aim of providing more convenient government services for foreigners who visit, work, study or live in the country.
For years, some foreign residents and travellers said the old system could be inconvenient, particularly in smaller towns and rural areas where local police stations were sometimes unfamiliar with the registration procedure.
Some long-term expatriates also said that although many foreigners knew about the legal requirement, the inconvenience of visiting a police station meant that some simply avoided registering when travelling domestically.
The introduction of online registration is expected to make compliance much easier while also creating a more standardised system for authorities.
Analysts have described the move as part of China’s broader effort to modernise administrative procedures. Similar policy changes are often introduced gradually through pilot programmes before being expanded nationwide.
The accommodation-registration reform also comes as China continues to introduce measures aimed at making travel easier for international visitors.
In recent years, the country has expanded visa-free entry arrangements for citizens of numerous countries and introduced changes designed to make digital payment systems such as Alipay and WeChat Pay easier for foreign travellers to use.
For foreign visitors staying outside hotels, the biggest change is simple: accommodation registration can now increasingly be handled online instead of requiring a trip to the local police station.
