China's National Day travel rush returns with 2.15M daily border crossings. Expats should plan ahead for peak dates Sept 25, 27, Oct 1, 4 and book early.

During last year’s eight-day National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, China recorded 888 million domestic trips.
Popular destinations across the country saw huge crowds, withfamous tourist attractions becoming especially busy. In Hunan, for example, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park reached its daily reservation limit of 53,000 visitors for October 3, while some other popular attractions in the province also sold out their available time slots.
This year, another major travel rush is approaching — and the numbers are already giving travellers a reason to plan ahead.
According to China’s National Immigration Administration, the average number of inbound and outbound passengers is expected to reach 2.25 million per day during the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday and 2.15 million per day during the National Day holiday. The busiest days are expected to be September 25, September 27, October 1 and October 4, when the number of people crossing the country’s border could exceed 2.4 million in a single day.
For international travellers, airports and border crossings are particularly important.
China Is About to Get Busy: What Expats Should Know Before National Day
Major international airports including Shanghai Pudong, Guangzhou Baiyun, Beijing Capital and Shenzhen Bao’an are expected to handle significant passenger volumes during the holiday period. Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport is projected to handle around 17,000–18,000 international passengers per day during the two holidays.
The Shenzhen–Hong Kong border is also expected to be busy. During the National Day holiday, Shenzhen’s Luohu, Shenzhen Bay and Futian ports are expected to handle approximately 250,000, 202,000 and 198,000 passengers per day respectively. The Hong Kong–Shenzhen high-speed railway crossing is also expected to see around 130,000 passengers daily.
So what does this mean if you are an expat living in China?
The holiday itself can be a great opportunity to explore the country, but timing matters. Popular attractions, transport hubs and border crossings may become significantly busier than usual. Booking trains, flights and hotels early can help avoid last-minute problems, while checking your passport and visa or residence documents before travelling is especially important for international residents.
China’s National Day holiday is not simply a few days off work. It is one of the country’s biggest annual travel periods — and the crowds of previous years show just how large it can become.
If you are planning to travel this October, the best strategy may be simple: know the peak dates, plan ahead and be ready for China at its busiest.
