A Moon Burger? A salted egg yolk pizza? These may not sound like mooncakes, but they are part of the increasingly creative Mid-Autumn Festival food scene in China.
The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on September 25 this year, and mooncakes are once again everywhere. But in 2026, the traditional round pastry is getting a modern makeover.
McDonald's has introduced a “Moon Burger,” while Domino's launched a “Star-Moon Pizza” featuring salted egg yolk. Neither is a traditional mooncake, but both borrow familiar Mid-Autumn Festival elements such as the moon, round shapes and classic flavors.
And the creativity doesn't stop there.
Healthier Mooncakes
Low-sugar and health-oriented mooncakes are becoming increasingly popular. Brands are reducing sugar and oil and experimenting with ingredients such as grains and fruit, as consumers pay more attention to what goes into their food.
More Choices, More Personalization
Mooncake gift boxes are changing, too. Some shops allow customers to choose individual mooncakes and create their own combinations, while others pair mooncakes with tea, fruit or nuts.
