Guo Bin, who lost both eyes at age 6, scored 721 on China's national disability entrance exam, the highest nationwide in his field. He began classes at Changchun University in September 2026, planning to study computer science and TCM, with a goal to teach at his former blind school.

On September 6, the 19-year-old reported to Changchun University in northeastern China after scoring 721 points in this year’s national college entrance examination for students with disabilities, the highest score nationwide among students in his field.

His parents, sister and several teachers from Wuhan School for Blind Children traveled to Changchun to accompany him on his first day.
For Guo, however, reaching university was never simply about passing an exam. It was the result of 13 years of learning how to rebuild a life without sight.

In August 2013, Guo was playing near his home in Fenxi, Shanxi Province, when an unfamiliar woman lured him away. He was attacked and suffered injuries that resulted in the loss of both eyes.
His parents found him covered in blood and barely conscious.
“I felt like the sky had fallen,” his mother, Wang Wenli, later recalled. “We didn't know what his future would be.” A year later, Guo's family brought him to Wuhan School for Blind Children, where one brief moment helped persuade them to stay. When Guo first arrived, teacher Zhang Long was rehearsing music with students. Seeing the nervous child standing at the classroom door, she stopped, walked over and bent down to hug him.
She did not try to give him a long speech or treat him differently from the other children. She simply welcomed him into the classroom.
Guo soon joined the other students in singing. On the way home that day, he told his parents, “I want to go to school in Wuhan.” Zhang later became his homeroom teacher and remained by his side for nine years. Guo continued to call her “Mom.”

The school became an important part of his life. Teachers adapted their lessons to students who could not see, while people outside the school also helped the family with education and living expenses. Music became one of Guo's passions.
His teacher, Qi Gaofeng, volunteered at the school for more than a decade. Since visually impaired students could not read conventional musical scores, he taught them by singing the notes and guiding their hands across the instruments.
Guo eventually learned to play four instruments. In 2015, he joined classmates in forming VMV, a band made up of visually impaired students, where he played bass.
He sometimes woke up at 4:30 a.m. to practice before school and later won national gold medals in an ocarina competition twice. His determination also showed in the classroom.
This year's examination result was the clearest evidence yet. Guo scored 145 in mathematics, 123 in Chinese, 129 in English and 139 in anatomy, bringing his total to 721.
Guo himself offered a much simpler explanation for his success. “I have always believed that if other people can do something, I can do it too,” he said.
Now, he is beginning a new stage at Changchun University, where he plans to study computer science and traditional Chinese medicine.
But he already knows where he hopes to go after graduation. Guo wants to return to Wuhan School for Blind Children and become a computer science teacher. He says the school needs teachers with professional computer skills, and he hopes his own experience can help younger visually impaired students.

When Guo was six, he arrived at the school as a frightened child who had just lost his sight. A teacher bent down and gave him a hug, offering him something his family desperately needed at the time — the feeling that he still had a place in the world.
Thirteen years later, he has walked through the gates of a university.
His sight has not returned. But the future that once seemed impossible is now firmly within reach.
