The incident happened on September 12 at Beijing’s National Stadium, commonly known as the Bird’s Nest. During a performance, a couple in the front section suddenly stood up. The man took out a ring and proposed to his girlfriend, who was reportedly wearing a wedding dress.

The couple also handed out wedding candies to people nearby, apparently hoping to share their celebration with the surrounding audience. The reaction, however, was not what they expected. People seated behind them began repeatedly shouting, “Sit down!” The calls became loud enough to compete with the music, and security staff eventually intervened.
A video of the incident was later shared widely on Chinese social media, where it quickly became a trending topic. Instead of congratulating the couple, many commenters expressed sympathy for the people whose view had been blocked.
“I paid to watch the concert, not your proposal,” one person wrote.
Another questioned why an entire audience should be expected to participate in a stranger’s romantic moment. The incident has highlighted a growing backlash against public marriage proposals at concerts in China.
Concert proposals have been popular for years, but they were once relatively rare and often arranged with the performer’s knowledge. A singer might invite a couple onto the stage, dedicate a song to them or help organize a surprise.
As China's live entertainment industry became increasingly popular after 2023, however, spontaneous proposals became much more common. Couples began standing up during romantic songs, getting down on one knee and turning the surrounding audience into unwilling witnesses.
Some romantic songs have even become closely associated with proposals, with social media users joking that several people will inevitably kneel down whenever certain songs begin.
The appeal is obvious. A packed concert offers music, lighting, giant screens and thousands of people — seemingly the perfect setting for a dramatic proposal. But the same atmosphere that makes a proposal memorable can also make it disruptive.
When couples stand up in front of other fans, they may block people's view of the stage. Some audience members have paid hundreds or even thousands of yuan for tickets, traveled to another city or taken time off work to attend a concert.
A 2025 report on young concertgoers reportedly listed proposals among behaviors that can interfere with the concert experience, alongside blocking views with large objects and talking loudly during performances. The issue, many commenters argue, is not that people are against romance.
The latest incident therefore raises a simple question about modern concert etiquette: When does a personal romantic moment become someone else’s public inconvenience? For the couple, the answer may have come from the crowd itself. “Sit down!”
