China’s National Meteorological Center (NMC) renewed a yellow typhoon warning at 6 a.m. on Aug. 7 as Typhoon Dolphin, the country’s 13th typhoon of the year, continued moving toward the East China coast.
As of 5 a.m. Friday, Dolphin was located over the northwestern Pacific Ocean, about 900 kilometers east of Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, at 27.2°N and 129.8°E. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 42 meters per second near its center, equivalent to a strong typhoon (Level 14), with a central pressure of 955 hPa.
The typhoon’s gale-force winds extended widely, with the radius of Level 7 winds reaching 260–360 kilometers, Level 10 winds extending 120–160 kilometers, and Level 12 winds covering 60–80 kilometers.
Forecasters said Dolphin is expected to move westward at a speed of 15–20 kilometers per hour on Aug. 7. Its intensity is expected to remain largely unchanged or strengthen slightly as it passes through the Ryukyu Islands before entering the East China Sea.
After entering the East China Sea, Dolphin is expected to slow down and gradually approach the coastal areas of eastern China. It may make landfall between the coast of Zhejiang and northern Fujian from the afternoon of Aug. 9 to the early morning of Aug. 10, with maximum winds of 35–42 meters per second (Level 12–14, typhoon to strong typhoon strength).
After landfall, the storm is forecast to move northwestward, gradually weakening.
Strong Winds and Heavy Rain Expected
From 8 a.m. Aug. 7 to 8 a.m. Aug. 8, Dolphin is expected to bring strong winds across parts of the Yellow Sea, the Yangtze River Estuary, the East China Sea, waters east of Taiwan, the Bashi Channel, Hangzhou Bay, and the Zhejiang coast.
Winds of Level 7–8 with gusts of Level 9–10 are forecast in affected areas, while much of the East China Sea could experience winds of Level 9–11 with gusts reaching Level 12–13. Areas directly affected by the typhoon’s center may see winds of Level 12–14, with gusts potentially reaching Level 15–16.
Heavy rainfall is also expected. During the same period, northern parts of Taiwan Island may experience heavy rain, with some areas receiving torrential rainfall of 50–80 millimeters.
Public Advised to Stay Alert
Residents in affected areas are advised to secure loose objects, avoid unnecessary outdoor activities, and stay away from unsafe buildings. People living in vulnerable structures should move to safer locations if needed.
The public should also remain cautious even if winds temporarily weaken when the typhoon’s center passes, as strong winds may return suddenly.
Heavy rainfall may trigger secondary hazards such as flash floods and landslides, and residents are advised to stay alert and follow local safety guidance.
