A recent promotional video from Dove Chocolate's official Tmall store has sparked a wave of backlash across Chinese social media.
The now-deleted short video, posted on August 23, featured a woman saying: "I kept asking my boyfriend for a Dove rainbow gift box, but he never got it for me. So today, while he was away, I shared it with a crush – he drove two hours to get it to me. So sweet."
The ad, which appeared to be part of Dove's Qixi (Chinese Valentine's Day) marketing campaign, was met with immediate criticism. Many viewers called out the ad for promoting infidelity and unhealthy relationship values.
The Customer Service Response
When outraged customers reached out to Dove's official customer service for an explanation, the response arguably made things worse.
Dove's customer service team responded: "The video content is personal creation and does not represent the brand's position. We have made it clear that this is just a storyline. If you don't like it, you can just scroll past it."
One customer shared a screenshot of their exchange with Dove's customer service, where the representative added: "Don't let the storyline mislead you – this gift box is better suited for someone you're in a confirmed relationship with. Save the sweetness for the right person."

By August 25, the controversial video had been removed from Dove's official Tmall account.
