Shanghai Earthquake : 6。2-Magnitude Tremor Felt in High-Rise Buildings

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck near the Sakishima Islands at 12:04 p.m. on July 3, causing noticeable shaking in Shanghai high-rises for 10–20 seconds. Residents in Jiading, Huangpu, and other districts reported swaying lights and dizziness. No official response yet.

Did you feel the building shake around noon today?


Around 12 p.m. on July 3, many people in Shanghai posted online asking the same question: “Was that an earthquake?


Residents in several districts, including Jiading, Huangpu, Hongkou, and Changning, said they felt shaking. Some reported that ceiling lights and windows were moving, while others said they felt dizzy and initially thought it was low blood sugar.

A resident surnamed Zhang, who was working on the 8th floor of an office building in Jiubao, said he felt dizzy at around 12:09 p.m. At first, he thought he had not slept well the night before, but then noticed that the office window glass was shaking. His colleagues also felt something unusual.


Zhang said the shaking lasted for about 10 to 20 seconds and was continuous. Items on desks and cabinets did not fall or move. When he asked in the company chat group, colleagues on higher floors said they felt the shaking more strongly, and many began wondering whether it had been caused by an earthquake.


According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck the Sakishima Islands at 12:04 p.m. on July 3.

The quake had a focal depth of 10 kilometers, with the epicenter located at 26.23°N latitude and 126.18°E longitude.


Posts on Chinese social media also showed that people in parts of Jiangsu and Zhejiang, including Suzhou and Hangzhou, felt the tremor.


Several social media users said the shaking was especially noticeable in high-rise buildings. One person joked online that they “ran straight down from the 18th floor.


As of the time of reporting, there had been no official response from the Shanghai Earthquake Bureau.
