A Beijing-based animal rescue organization that recently warned it was on the verge of closure has received an overwhelming wave of public support, allowing its operations to continue for the time being.

The rescue center, known as Little Adoption Shop (领养小铺), drew widespread attention after its founder, Chris, a foreign animal welfare advocate living in China, announced that severe financial difficulties were threatening the future of the organization. According to a post published on June 21, the center's two rescue facilities lacked sufficient funds to cover rent and staff salaries, raising the possibility that they might be forced to shut down.

The announcement quickly sparked concern among animal lovers and former adopters across China. Many people shared stories of animals they had adopted through the organization over the years, while others offered support by purchasing merchandise, pet supplies, English-language learning materials, and other products sold through the rescue center's online store.

According to Chris, more than 4,000 new orders were placed within a week of the appeal. On June 24, he released an update stating that the rescue center had secured enough funds to maintain normal operations for the time being and expressed his gratitude to everyone who had offered assistance.

Chris, a Yale University graduate and former professional screenwriter, began his animal rescue work in Beijing more than a decade ago. A turning point came when he rescued approximately 90 dogs from a truck transporting them for sale. The experience inspired him to remain in China and dedicate himself to helping stray and abandoned animals.

He later founded Little Adoption Shop and established two rescue facilities in Beijing. Over the years, the organization has provided shelter and care for hundreds of abandoned, injured, and sick cats and dogs. At its peak, the rescue network reportedly housed more than 800 animals at one time, while currently caring for more than 600 rescued cats and dogs.

Despite the scale of the operation, Chris has often emphasized that the organization functions with extremely limited resources. He has previously noted that there is no dedicated administrative team, leaving him personally responsible for many aspects of daily operations, including management, publicity, and adoption services. Beyond running the shelters, he has also been involved in rescuing stray animals discovered through various projects and frequently assists with efforts to reunite lost pets with their owners.

Maintaining the rescue facilities requires substantial ongoing expenses, including food, veterinary treatment, rent, utilities, and staff wages. After 16 years of continuous rescue work, the financial pressure had become increasingly difficult to sustain.

The recent response from the public has therefore been especially encouraging. What began as a warning about a possible shutdown soon prompted many supporters to lend a hand, with former adopters, animal lovers, and concerned netizens purchasing products from the rescue center's online store and sharing its story online. Their support has helped provide temporary financial relief and allowed the rescue operation to continue its work caring for vulnerable animals.

For many supporters, the story is not only about saving a rescue center from closure, but also about recognizing years of quiet dedication by an individual who chose to devote much of his life to improving the welfare of stray animals in China. The overwhelming response suggests that the compassion Chris has shown to countless animals over the years has now been returned by the community he helped inspire.
