Success Case | Transfer from Visa-Free to Business Visa Within China
Client Background
A 60-year-old German national entered China under the visa-free policy. He arrived with a clear goal: explore local business opportunities and, if promising, extend his stay beyond the initial visa-free window.
His visa-free period was set to expire on 5 July. He reached out to us on 26 June. That left exactly 9 days.

What We Found
A standard business visa (M-visa) typically requires application outside China — meaning the client would have to book a last-minute flight out of the country, submit the application at a Chinese consulate abroad, and wait for approval before flying back.
Last-minute airfares were expensive. The timeline was tight. And the client was frustrated — he had just started making meaningful connections and didn't want to interrupt his momentum.
To make matters more complicated, at age 60, he was not eligible for a long-term work visa, which meant the business visa was his only practical path forward.
What We Did
We reviewed his situation holistically and identified one key advantage: he had already established a relationship with a reputable local partner company in China.
That local company — with qualified Chinese staff on its payroll — was able to issue a formal invitation letter, a critical document for the M-visa application.
Leveraging this invitation letter and a complete set of supporting documents, we liaised directly with the local Exit-Entry Administration Bureau to secure an in-country conversion from visa-free status to a business visa.
This approach bypassed the requirement to leave China entirely — saving the client both time and money, while keeping his business exploration on track.
The Result
The client successfully obtained a business visa (M-visa) without leaving China
No last-minute international flights or expensive airfare
No disruption to his business meetings and networking schedule
He was able to continue pursuing the opportunities he had found — legally and hassle-free
