A father in Changsha has ignited heated debate after revealing he spends ¥6,000 each month on growth hormone injections for his 12‑year‑old daughter.
"She's a girl, and I have certain expectations about her height," Mr. Li told reporters on July 18. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime chance. This is a valuable investment."
He says the injections are working. Normally, a child might grow 2–3 cm over six months. His daughter has grown 4 cm in half a year. He is especially focused on acting now, before she starts menstruation — the point at which growth hormone secretion naturally drops and height gains become harder to achieve.

Online debate: “Pulling up seedlings” goes viral
Chinese netizens reached for an old idiom: bá miáo zhù zhǎng — "pulling up seedlings to help them grow faster." The seedlings die. The point is obvious.
Some defended the father:
“He’s a responsible dad. His daughter will thank him.”
Others were less convinced:
“This is pure parental anxiety disguised as love.”
“Things that go against the laws of nature will eventually backfire.”
“Exercise and a regular routine work – hormones are a shortcut that may backfire.”

Why more Chinese parents are suddenly showing up
Since growth hormone was added to China's national medical insurance in January 2026, the cost of a long-acting injection has dropped by 75% — from ¥3,500 to around ¥900 per shot. Short-acting versions got cheaper too.
Hospitals are now seeing more inquiries and more injections. The barrier to entry just got lower — and so did the hesitation for many anxious parents.
Doctors are hitting the brakes
Growth hormone is a prescription-only drug in China, strictly reserved for diagnosed conditions — growth hormone deficiency, idiopathic short stature — and only in children whose growth plates have not yet fused.
Used without a genuine medical need, it can disrupt the endocrine system, spike blood sugar, affect thyroid function — or, in the worst case, cause early bone plate closure, which could actually leave a child shorter than they would have been naturally.
The official advice from doctors is simple: get a full growth evaluation at a qualified hospital. Follow a medical prescription — not parental anxiety.
