999 Cups, 0 Yuan: Chinese Milk Tea Brand Chagee Apologizes After Ordering Glitch
Chagee, a well-known Chinese milk tea brand, apologized after a pricing error on its WeChat mini program briefly listed several drinks at RMB 0.
According to media reports, in the early hours of July 2, several users found that products in Chagee’s “Yuanshan Fresh Tea” series were showing a price of 0 yuan on the brand’s ordering mini program.
Many users quickly placed orders. Some order pages reportedly showed that there were tens of thousands of cups waiting to be made. One screenshot circulating online showed a user ordering 999 cups at once, sparking heated discussion.

The error lasted for around 10 minutes, according to staff at a Chagee store. By around 1 a.m., prices on the mini program had returned to normal. The 0-yuan orders were later automatically canceled, with payments refunded through the original payment channels.
Chagee’s Hubei subsidiary later issued an apology, saying the issue was caused by an operational backend configuration error. The company said the affected products had been intended for a RMB 9.9 promotion, but were accidentally listed at 0 yuan.
The company said it would cancel abnormal orders generated from the error and give affected users three no-threshold 0.01-yuan drink coupons for the same product series.
However, the compensation plan also triggered debate online. Some users questioned why people who tried to take advantage of the pricing error should receive coupons, while others said the brand would likely face criticism whether it offered compensation or not.
In a follow-up comment, Chagee’s Hubei subsidiary clarified that orders identified by its risk-control system as involving abnormal operations would not be included in the compensation. The company added that the relevant abnormal orders had been canceled in time and that stores did not make those drinks.
The coupons are limited to Chagee stores in Hubei, excluding airport pop-up stores.
