Shanghai’s plum rain season has arrived — and so have the flying termites.

On the evening of June 20, videos posted online showed large numbers of flying termites gathering near Lujiazui Metro Station. Under the station lights, the insects appeared in dense swarms, and some passengers reportedly used umbrellas to keep them away.

One online user described the scene as people “dancing like tap dancers” while trying to shake termites off their bodies.

The incident quickly drew attention because Shanghai has recently entered its plum rain season, with rising temperatures, frequent rain, and high humidity. This hot and damp weather creates ideal conditions for termites to reproduce and swarm.

According to Shanghai Metro, the termites near Exit 1 of Lujiazui Station came from trees in the surrounding green belt, not from inside the station. Termites are strongly attracted to light, so metro entrances and streetlights can easily become gathering points during hot and humid weather. The station has taken emergency measures and contacted relevant departments for pest control.

For residents, termite prevention at home is especially important during hot, humid evenings. Closing doors and windows, turning off unnecessary outdoor lights, drawing curtains, and using air conditioning or dehumidifiers can help reduce the chance of flying termites entering the home.

If termites have already built nests or damaged wooden structures, residents are advised to contact professional termite control services instead of trying to handle the problem on their own.

In Shanghai, residents can search for registered termite control companies through Suishenban or the Shanghai Property Management mini program. They can also call 12345 or 962121 for consultation or assistance.
