A woman in China is seeking a refund after her boyfriend spent RMB94,500, around S$18,064, on a Louis Vuitton ostrich-skin handbag, claiming she was misled by store staff over how rare and new the item really was.

The woman, surnamed Zhang, said she and her boyfriend were travelling in Hangzhou on June 8 when they visited the Louis Vuitton boutique at Hubin Yintai in77. According to Zhang, a sales associate quickly approached her and began recommending a particular ostrich-skin handbag.

Zhang said she was told the bag was a latest design and that there were only two pieces available in the whole country. Although she had already bought another handbag in Chengdu two months earlier and did not intend to purchase another one, she said the staff continued to promote the bag and emphasize its rarity.

Eventually, Zhang’s boyfriend agreed to buy the bag as a birthday gift for her.

However, after returning to their hotel, Zhang noticed something unusual while filming the bag to share with friends. She claimed that one side of the handbag appeared to have uneven colouring compared with the rest of the bag.

She then contacted the store that evening. Staff reportedly explained that the colour difference was due to the natural texture of ostrich leather and was not necessarily a defect. The store initially offered to arrange an exchange.

But Zhang’s concerns grew after she searched online and found posts from other customers who appeared to have seen or tried on the same style of bag in different Louis Vuitton stores months earlier. This made her suspect that the bag she bought may not have been as rare or as new as she was led to believe.

Zhang claimed that the bag could have been a display piece that had been handled and tried on by many customers before being sold to her.

She then requested a full refund, but the store reportedly refused. According to reports, the reason given was that her boyfriend’s initials had already been engraved on the label of the dust bag, making the purchase ineligible for refund or return.

Zhang argued that the engraving was only on the dust bag label, not on the handbag itself. She said replacing a dust bag should not affect the resale of the handbag and questioned why that should prevent a refund.

The store later reportedly offered Zhang the option to exchange the bag for another Louis Vuitton product of equal or higher value, but she continued to push for a refund.

The incident has sparked online discussion in China, with many netizens debating whether luxury brands should be more transparent about display items, limited stock claims, and return policies.

Some supported Zhang, saying customers who pay nearly RMB100,000 for a luxury handbag should be clearly informed if an item has been used for display or tried on by others.

Others argued that natural leather products can have colour variations and that personalized engraving often affects return eligibility.

Louis Vuitton has not publicly issued a detailed response to the case. Reports said the handbag has been sent to the company for assessment to determine whether the colour difference should be considered a defect.

The case has also raised broader questions about luxury retail practices, especially whether sales staff should clearly explain product condition, rarity claims, and refund restrictions before customers make expensive purchases.
