Chinese Woman Develops Red, Itchy Skin After Extreme Sun Protection Routine

A woman in Jiangsu province, eastern China, developed facial redness and itching after using excessive sun protection while travelling.

According to local reports, she applied sunscreen and then wore a hat and full-face mask to block strong sunlight. However, after wearing the full coverage for a long period, she began feeling hot and noticed redness on her face. By the next morning, itchy rashes had appeared.

Doctors at the Sixth People’s Hospital of Nantong said her symptoms were a typical skin irritation reaction caused by keeping the face covered for too long in a hot, humid environment. They explained that although sun protection is important, extreme full-face coverage can trap heat and moisture, irritating the skin.

Full-face sun protection products, often nicknamed “facekinis,” have become increasingly popular in China. Many are sold online as products that provide complete protection from ultraviolet rays, with some brands promoting cooling fabrics, make-up-friendly designs, or skin-care features.

China’s sun protection market has grown rapidly in recent years, driven by concerns about UV damage, skin ageing, skin cancer risks, and the cultural preference for lighter skin.

However, doctors warn that excessive sun avoidance may also create problems, including skin irritation and reduced sunlight exposure, which can affect the body’s ability to produce vitamin D.

Medical experts recommend using lighter, breathable sun protection methods, such as umbrellas and loose sun-protective clothing. They also advise avoiding outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day, especially between 10am and 4pm.
